Cape Horn solo in a multihull - any examples?
Not talking about the $10m+ budget French record setting efforts. Are there any stories of solo or double-handed cruisers rounding Cape Horn on production cats or tris? For instance as an alternative to selling your cat in Aus/NZ or sailing through the Suez on the way back from the South Pacific.

you need to check your geography the cape of good hope is the alternative to going via suez after the south pacific, many catamarans do it,and a few tri's
going via cape horn would mean re crossing the south pacific to get to the atlantic on a typical circumnavigation after crossin the south pacific

Re: Cape Horn solo in a multihull - any examples?
Well the Cape of Good Hope route is about 4000Nm longer than via Cape Horn (say from Tahiti to Spain) and some of it (SE of Cape of Good Hope itself) is predominantly upwind if one consults the Pilot Charts.
But the question is really just about Cape Horn specifically.

Didn't Rosie Swales (sp?) do it with her husband and small kid(s) quite some years ago? In a Snowgoose IIRC.

A few have done it. David Lewis on the first ever circumnavigation by cat. The Swales, the Casanovas but not many.
One guy who did it recently is a guy called Hans (don;t know his last name). He built his boat in Camden Haven NSW. Went through the straits of Magellan the other way - east to west. A Schionning called Corazon. Should be home soon.
cheers
Phil

Are there any articles, first person opinions on how multihulls behave in large swell/wave conditions, day in and day out?

You can find it in "The parachute anchoring system", Chapter 1, written by the Casanova's. Some paragraphs are reproduced in "The cruising multihull" by Chris White. Another source is "The case of the cruising trimaran" by Jim Brown. There is also a lot of articles in the "Sea people magazine/ The sailorman" magazine of the PCA (no longer in production) about Wharram catamarans. For instance, there is the account of Henk De Velde surviving hurricane Oscar in the Indian Ocean.

Re: Cape Horn solo in a multihull - any examples?
If you are headed back to Europe from the South Pacific, why not sail to Puerto Mont and do the Chilean canals? Then you can enter the Atlantic via the Beagle Channel and Isla Estado after having spent a season in one of the most spectacular cruising grounds in the world. No rounding of the horn necessary and most of your high latitude sailing will be done in protected waters. Maybe El Pinguino will chime in with some thoughts as he has spent a lot of time down there and done the passage from NZ to Chile. I would not worry about the number of hulls as this is irrelevant as long as the boat is seaworthy and you stay out of the ice.

Depends a lot on the characteristics and relative direction of the swells, and of course the specific boat. Big smooth Pacific-like swells...no problem in most cases. Cats can be quite unpleasant in beam seas, but a big smooth swell abeam, not so bad.
Worst case for most cats is not big smooth regular swells, but short steep seas. These are not pleasant in most any small boat, but cats more so if pounding into them (close hauled or motoring into them) or taking them abeam. Short steep beam seas are not pleasant in a mono either, but cats can get a nasty snap roll going as the beam sea/trough passes under each hull in sequence.
The other potential issue is bigger seas from astern, especial if steep (again a big smooth swell, not likely an issue), because many cats can break into a surf quite easily. Unexpectedly going from 7 knots to 15+ almost instantly is a bit unnerving (you dont really have to steer into a surf on many cats like with many monos...a wave just needs to catch you just right...and off you go!).
Seas astern can give you a pleasant boost if just right. I had nice regular long period 6' foot seas from astern once on a downwind run to the Dry Tortugas...sailing at about 8 knots...gentle surf to 10 on each wave face...quite a pleasant run...unfortunately rare to catch it just right though.
