Buying the right catamaran
I would like some advise , my partner are looking at buying our 1st cat,
my partner loves the lay out of the lagoon 40 /seawind 38 and we also like the leopard ,graninger and perry.
I been advise to stay away from the french boats and stay with australia
boats, we are going to go for a production boat , as we intend to live aboard
Again I been advised no small the a 38/40 The bigger boats have more room
everyone has an opionion, whilst I am getting great information , which is helping narraw down search. I would love some imput from the people that have inbarked on the same life style, as we are about
looking forward to everyone responce
Peter

Re: buying the right catamaran
Wiy stay away from french boats?
I bought my FP in Australia after looking at a wide range of makes. It ticked more boxes than any of the others I looked at in my price range.

Re: buying the right catamaran
Im also curious in the 'No French boat' comment. Im on the prowl for a cat and the FPs have ticked the right boxes for me. I will be living aboard (albeit only for 6 months) with a family of 4.

The French boats are world leaders in sales.
Resale value is good.
On top of this, you must buy what you really like.... its your money and your happiness.

I have a Seawind. Love the boat, and factory support has been great although second owner and almost 15 year old boat. My next boat will be a seawind.

Hi Peter , all the boats you have mentioned are good boats, the only point I would make is that lagoon , leopard vs the Grainger/ Seawind are very different boats with the lagoons holding the most volume. I went through a very similar decision last year , FP vs Lagoon vs Seawind. Lots of videos on the link below on my final choice.....just finished today installing the water maker so ready for a Longer trip in Indonesia in the coming months

Hi Peter
If you want to sail as well as sit, look at the Chris White Atlantic boats. We sailed 35,000 miles in ours without a twitch. Strong, fast and designed from the outside in.

Re: buying the right catamaran
There are many good cats around, including the French cats. There are also some very good South African built boats. Go onto the owners forums and get opinions as well from those that own and perhaps better still, those that have owned them before. I have owned a couple of Voyage cats - would I own another? Certainly. But I still look at other boats as well. I have never owned a Fountain Pajot but in my eyes they used to produce some of the prettiest cats made - Im not so so fond of their latest rash of cats. Go and have a look at what fits with your budget and then seek opinions from owners who actually sail them.

Re: buying the right catamaran
Yo Sailor,
In general Cats are Dogs for sailing! (No matter what Cruising World says)
Leopard is the only way to go!
The Leopard 40 is also a dog (needs 16 Knots to move anywhere)
However the newer Leopard 38,46,48, & 58 Kinda do what is promised! I have Skippered extensively on them all!
One sacrifices speed for comfort!
Enjoy your issue!
With Cheers,
Captd

Re: buying the right catamaran
Am I wrong or are the Seawind boats built in Vietnam? I saw a presentation on the new 1600 and this will be built in Vietnam. I have toured several French factories and you would be hard pressed to find better multihull build quality anywhere.

Stay away from French boats and stay with Australia boats?? Spoken like an Australian boat manufacturer!! I say you are getting bad advise, since the most popular cats are French. However, if you just don't like the French - that's understandable - to each his own.
I love my Lagoon 380, along with the majority of all cat owners, who happen to own a Lagoon 380. I think it's still the #1 most popular cat and/or has the record for the most produced of any cat. Wouldn't that prove something? Like we all bought them because we like them, in spite of the fact that they are French??
