Boat Name Needed

Hi,

in addition to teasing my own brain with it, I am open for suggestions to name my new boat.
See my albums for pictures of it.

She is still looking for a decent new name ;-)

The name should express:

-Internationality
-Dynamism & sportivity
-Love to nature
-Femininity
-Beauty
-Endevourism

any good ideas? It should be easily spelled and pronounced on top!

I love the names Traveller or Aquarius, but they are the names of to many boats already.

Thanks!

Re: Boatname needed!

We just renamed our 'new to us boat' due to the purchase agreement. What I did was make a word.doc and brainstorm every possible name I could think of. I came up with about 100 possible names. We ended up with IBIS. The previous name was Fair Lady, the boat's previous name to that was Bittersweet. I think I considered the attributes your list above also . Ibis is a coastal bird here in SC, An international migrant, willing to fly in any wind, a beautiful animal, etc... It just worked well for us. It's a short simple word, and not taken as far as CG Documentation.

We spent a couple months working on an appropriate name, so take your time.

Re: Boatname needed!

I was struggling to come up with a name when I thought about how my father's boat name was made up of the previous owner's daughters names.

So I decided to use the names of my two nieces, Jessica and Abbey and ended up with Jessabbé. So rather than worrying whether the name means something to other people or if it just sounds cool, it is a name that means something to me and that works for me

Re: Boatname needed!

I would be honored if you named it after my recently deceased cat, Squirrel.
It does seem to meet all your criteria.

Re: Boatname needed!

Karis, or Charis or the greek Kharites

Charis \ch(a)-ris\ as a girl's name is pronounced KARE-iss. It is of Greek origin, and the meaning of Charis is "grace". From "kharis". The form Charissa was first used by Spenser for a character in his poem "The Faerie Queene" (16th century). Charis was first used as a given name in the 17th century, probably to symbolize the Christian concept of charity. Mythology: a reference to the Three Graces (Greek "kharites"), symbols of womanly beauty, charm, and inspiration. The graces were Aglais (brilliance), Thalia (flowering), and Euphrosyne (joy).

Re: Boatname needed!

No more than two syllables please. Think- Rose, star, Hawk, Jess, Abb J,

Jessabbe' sounds like wassabe.

Go with- Blue, Beau, Belle,

Don't do a name that tries to defy to ocean, like - La MER, or tempest, or Storm Chaser, or Sea Queen, especially Titanic! or annoying fishing boat names like- Reel Time, or Nauti Gull.

You can't go wrong with nameing the boat after your mother, for example, My mom's name is Shelba Jean, so I was Going to go with ' Shelba J' ( the girl friend did not go for that one) . Her nick name is Dolly, Likewise my dad's boat is named 'Hello Dolly'.

Re: Boatname needed!

I've got a little 30' Scarab that I named "For-Play". I named it that because it wasn't for work. My cousin named her little sloop "Gabbiano" which is the Italian word for seagull......I think.

Re: Boatname needed!

I like Greek names. My choice would be Orithyia (or Oreithyia) who was married to Boreas, the north wind. Her name meant "mountain gale".

Looks like a lovely boat. Congratulations whatever she may be called.

Re: Boatname needed!

Several Greek goddesses might fit the bill, although the first one is very common(overused?) for boat names.

Alcyone, also said "Halcyone," is the Goddess of the Sea, the Moon, Calm, and Tranquility. There was also a Pleiade named Alcyone (check out the Nymphs page for that). She was the daughter of Aeolus and wife of Ceyx. She and Ceyx were a very happy couple, but then Ceyx died in a shipwreck and Alcyone threw herself into the sea (what can you do? She was a silly young girl then). The gods took pity and turned the two into birds (Alcyone became a halcyon, or a kingfisher, and Ceyx became a ceyx, or a gannet). Alcyone made her nest on the beach, and waves were big and scary, but the gods made the sea calm so she could lay her eggs. Therefore, "halcyon days," when storms never occur. Ahhhhhhh. It is she who brings life to death and death to life.
Brizo was worshipped by the women of Delos (not the men, for some odd reason) as the Protector of Mariners. Food offerings were set out for her in little boats (no fish, of course). Brizo was (or gave answers to) an oracle who gave answers in dreams about navigation and fishing matters. Very interesting. Hmmm. That's one I didn't know about before Encyclopedia Mythica.
Halia was the personification of the saltiness of the Sea.
