We were looking for a catamaran for all round sailing and were either going to buy new or buy secondhand and put on the items we felt were necessary for the type of sailing we intend to do. We eventually bought a 9 year old Solaris and then added on wind generator, solar panels, watermaker, radarplotter etc so we could lead an independent life. She is sailing well and we are crossing the Med (West to East) this Spring/Summer.

Budget is of course the main factor and there is plenty of choice in the 35-40' range.

The original Leopard 38, 1999 - 2005, 104 built, all owners versions (3 cabin W shower). Stable, built to round the horn, not condo like. Trading at about US$180K-ish. I like better than the new gen Leopards. Worth a look.

I am partial to Mantas, I live on and cruise one. Under-40 is pretty small for trans-oceanic passaging. If your friend is that well off, why limit the size of the boat? For stability (=safety) in ocean-scale seas and for speed (= ability to avoid weather), size matters. Size also allows for more load carrying capacity. My Manta has a functional payload, after full fuel & water tanks, of a few thousand pounds. That gets eaten up really quickly by dinghy, jerry cans, spare parts, provisions, etc.

Yeah I'm biased - I bought one a year ago.

At this point I would not say stay away from the last few made at all. I personally oversaw the completion of the last one made after the factory was shut down and can assure you there is nothing wrong with that one. I also oversaw the correction of any problems on two of those last few boats, including the president and owner of Manta's personal boat. None of the issues were major structural, mostly cosmetics and fit and finish. Mechanical and electrical were fine, small details there as well. I would say any of those boats at this stage are up to standard.

As for the Mantas sweet cats if we spend a lot more $$ on our current boat I will wish we had looked for one. Didnt see any close to 200k

38's have gone for 180- 200k, lot of 40's have sold between 225-275k, some have gone for 200k.

There are a few Manta 38's that have sold for below 130k and quite a few for below 150k.

There were only 8 of them made, so there can't be very many sold. I remember one selling for around 150k, but not below 130k. I'm not saying you are wrong but, having a Manta, I'm a bit tuned into the selling prices and the specific boats sold.

There was an early prototype called "Carpe Diem" that sold below 130k. That wasn't a Manta.

I got the info of soldboats.com. Was Carpe Diem one of the two balsa cored Mantas built by Tek?
