And I was able to figure that out all by myself before you posted it.

Stick with the mono hull. Almost all catamarans, and especially the smaller ones sail like a shoe. Try chartering one and that should change your mind. Now if you have the money for a big Privlege or similar that is a different story.

Best Blue Water Cat Around 35-40'

Yes, like two shoes with keels bolted on to a platform that has a mast and a sail purposely downsized so it merely screams (vs flying) on a reach over the tops of waves. Yes, it can't go to weather like 1 hull but it's benefits outweigh just about everything else.

Apologies, it's weavis's fault for getting me started!

Maybe a small pilot house could be built on deck

Yeah... I remember a trip running before a F7-8 Cherbourg to Poole in a Tiki 26... skipped past a big mono reefed right down.. crew huddled in foulies in the cockpit...
Shortly after I skipped past a freighter doing 14kts.. the Bridge Watch came out and watched me dance into the distance.. was touching 16kts most of the way.. and so glad to be wearing a wet suit..
Also found out that night that the Wharram hatches leave a lot to be desired.. had over a foot of water sloshing in each hull... but.. its an easy fix..

That post alone tells me you have absolutely zero experience with catamarans.

Given the OP's requirements, my choice would a Chris White Mastfoil 41.

Privilege 39, hands down. See this link:
CATAMARAN CAPSIZES IN 170 MILE PER HOUR WINDSÂ*Â*Â* For the past fifteen years

We are lucky enough to be on big sister P-45, and for the reasons your friend wants a true blue water boat. We've been in some horrible stuff, and we were never concerned, no did the cat show any signs of anything other than having fun in it. Now I have to talk myself out of "playing" in squalls! These boats were built to take it and keep on trucking.
