Yes, I have an on board kit. It takes about 7 to 14 days for the beer to brew, then another week or ten days after bottling for the yeast to carbonate it. It is actually a bit of fun making one's own.

There was a recent thread that covered on board brewing, it is very do-able.
We brew our own using the Coopers Home Brew Kit, available on line. Ian is fussy about his beer and really enjoys the beer we produce. It is a 'just add water' system and very easy. It prices out very well. There are quite a few different styles of ale available, and every one so far has been delightful. I am not a beer drinker, but Ian did me a batch of Ginger Beer (not a Coopers product), and I love it!. Much better with my Rum than coke! There are other brands of home brew kits available
The advantage of this home brew system is that you can buy reuseable plastic PET bottles - a boon on a sail boat.

Depends where you're going and what kind of beer you like!!

We cruise in Mexico and we like west coast microbrews. Those two things don't go together at all. Mexico has very limited beer choices and absolutely no microbrews. So in our case the answer was "buy all we can and store it anywhere it fits!"

Keep them in the bilge or anywhere else out of the sunlight, that's really what screws them up (if they're bottled, that's why most beer is bottled in dark glass).

Keep one or two in the fridge to stay cool. If you drink more than that, I don't know what you can do about it. But remembering to put a beer in the fridge every day or so isn't too much of a tall order.

I have an Engel and even in remarkably hot temperatures it will keep quite cold. Bump the knob past 2 (it goes to 5) and it will freeze all the contents.

That's what I do too. Another thing to think about is beer as emergency rations. Just finished a book about a fellow who sailed the Atlantic in a small canoe two times. First time he drank a 15 ounce can of of evaporated milk each day for hydration and nourishment. On the second voyage he decided beer would be a better choice. Sounds good to me.

Timing is everything. Yesterday, on Public Radio's food program, they interviewed some guys who make beer, a gallon at a time, using a stockpot, some tubing and air locks, bottles and a capper. Here's the book reference: The Splendid Table Store

If I ever were to sail to some place where I had a month to wait for my next beer, I'd consider doing this. They make all classes of beer right on the stove top. Very cool.

This conversation just forced me to get up and open a cold Stone IPA. San Diego is now the center of the craft beer universe. Ballast Point, Stone Brewery, and tons more opening each week. Life is good.

In my travels I have found red stripe and lighthouse tolerable so that is what prompted the question. I don't think warm beer will ever be a favorite but again if I had a beer or pop to chose from after a day of working in the sun I would go with beer.

I am going to try to make some and see how it turns out while I still have the land as my stomping ground. The ideas are so plentiful here. Keep them coming.
