Ocean crossing when you're not on speaking terms with your shipmate can't be fun.

Two young guys I met in Durban mid-80's were preparing to crew on a 30ftmono to Mauritius. I went down to see the boat, met the owner/captain. He seemed pretty intense, disorganized and quick-tempered.

The boat was later found drifting off Mauritius. The owner had shot and killed both boys, he was unharmed but had had a total mental breakdown.

Also remember two 20-ish German or Swedish girls who left Cape Town bound for Brazil with a guy they'd met at the yacht club the previous week. They ended up being towed into Fortaleza, minus the captain. He tried to rape them, they shoved him overboard in mid-Atlantic and kept going.
