The positive is that the wind is very light right now. The negative is it's on his nose. He could get stuck within sight of land. 2.5 knots is probably idle speed on one motor. It's going to be a long few days for captain and crew.

i have sent a email to my buddy in horta so they will be expecting him some time on sunday,and ready to give assistance if needed,hopefully the marina will be able to find a space for him as well.

my guess is that he is keeping a reserve of fuel for the last 50 miles or so so may speed up once closer.

I'm sure Phil will appreciate you giving them a heads up on his arrival. We only spent 4 days in Horta but I must say, it's one of the nicest places I've been to in the world. What great people, scenery, food, and drink. There are definitely worse places to be stuck in while making repairs.

The course continues to be near straight which is one excellent sign.

My numbers show if everything stays the same he should be in Horta in 30-36 hours. Hope all is well. Very curious to see what has been keeping him at 2.5-4 knots over several days. Although I am sure it will be several days before he gets online to inform us. Somehow I feel like he might have some more important things to attend to.

Heckuva feeling to be driving a rocketship and be busted down to limping along.
I spun the (rubber) prop hub on my center console fishing boat one afternoon. Had left Port A behind and was heading up the Lydia Ann channel of Aransas Bay, about 9-10 miles from the dock, cruising at ~25kt when zip, no propulsion.
200hp o/b engine was running fine, but no thrust (checked to see the prop was still on and barely moving). Determined that I could actually make about 0.8-1kt progress on the GPS (by the shaft dragging the prop hub I guess), so just kept chugging along and enjoyed the trip as best I could ( at <1kt, you can actually fix a meal and eat it on the pulpit, without the 100% alertness that 20-40kts requires).
It got dark and I didn't make the dock until after midnight (20-30 minute trip took ~8 hours). Could have called for a tow but didn't want to bother with a minor problem (although a headwind would have probably been enough to halt any forward motion).

Boatman's gonna have to unwind

after this (forced?) snails pace segment...
Lots of interesting speculation on what the problem is, so how about a hole in a hull (cause to be determined), with a jury-rigged patch that is just holding on, slowing things down?
