Are You Interested in a Long-Term Catamaran Rental ?

A client has asked me to put a 'Gap Year for Grown-ups' package together. We will be arranging a 40-50 foot catamaran for him and his family to cruise the Bahamas and Caribbean for a year.

He has asked full a decent level of support along the way. We are creating an on going, onboard training program (engineering certificates, and up to RYA Yachtmaster), handing comms sourcing and finances, even overseeing home-schooling programs!

A the main point of posting this is to answer the question ringing round everyones heads and hasn't really been answered: turns out we can do a recent build Lagoon 42 for $10k a month. I'm putting together other boat options so will post these also.

Sail away without selling up!

Ouch. lets see, wait six months at 10k gives 60k, buy a boat, go cruising on 3k a month save 7k for 12 months, that's 84k, now you can afford to give me your boat gratis and still be ahead.

I don't really understand what you're trying to tell us. Is it that for $10,000/month you can supply us a boat?

$10k a month too rich for me But I don't think outrageous - folk gotta remember that not only renting ready to go, but some support (and understanding!) and the opportunity to shortcut (or omit?!) a chunk of learning curve, which all costs time and money - even if most of us don't count that in £ notes........and is spread over many years.

In straight cash terms could even argue that (for someone new to the boat thing) could even turn out as saving money if later buying a vessel of that size - easy enough to lose 10% on a boat by buying badly........especially if then re-selling. After 6 months or a year onboard would have a pretty good idea of what they needed.

I would also say there is some value from a large degree of certainty on costs for "only" a year (longgg Charter, but very short to own / re-sell a boat)...........and avoiding the aggravation factor of buying, maintaining and then selling abroad / at a distance - not to be discounted that one.

LOL - so long to finish the post that the thread got moved back!...........oh well, it's in my ignore section now.

Re: Are You Interested in a Long-Term Catamaran Rental ?

I think it's fair. A new Lagoon 42 is around $600,000. They rent (bareboat) for $4000 to $9000 for a week depending on location and season. Throw in support and training and everything else and it's not bad.

Re: Are You Interested in a Long-Term Catamaran Rental ?

I know of a couple who bought a new FP Saba 50 for about $1.2 mil with all the toys. It was for sale at the brokerage in less than 6 months when they decided sailing wasn't for them. Broker said they'd take $900K for it. Those people could have benefited greatly from a program like this.

Can you do 1 month for $10k or do you have to commit to 12 months for $120k?

If you do 1 month, can it be during the high season in the Caribbean (December/January)?

Re: Are You Interested in a Long-Term Catamaran Rental ?

You guys did notice this post was from 2011, right? So he wouldn't have even been talking about the new Lagoon 42. Probably the Lagoon 42 from early-mid 90's.
