Anyone Carry a Motorcycle or Moped on Board?

I'm considering the idea of bringing a 250-350 dual sport moto or an offroad scooter along on a cruise.... I'm just curious to know if anyone has experience with this or has seen it done? I'm not so concerned with the mechanics of loading and unloading, but more so the feasibility of actually cruising with something that can potentially rust and/or corrode and seize.

storage would be on an aft platform by the davits/ dink.

this outta be good....

An issue is having a license to operate it. You'd need to check where you plan to go.

I understand that could be an issue and I would def have to plan on some red tape encounters...but, I dont think that would be the prohibitive factor, based on where I want to go

My assumptions here may be incorrect but...

I've read (I think) that tri's have a quick motion at sea.
If that's true wouldn't the momentum/inertia of a motorcycle be a worry on a fast-accelerating trimaran in a seaway?

If someone builds a lightweight folding all-stainless motorcycle I'll make room...

A licence to operate a motor vehicle during a short stay is not generally a problem - most countries will let you travel for a few months on your overseas licence.

What will get you in just about any country you go to is being able to get the bike legally on a road , without importing and paying duty on it and/or having it certified as compliant/safe iaw local regulations.

Once it is deemed road legal, you will then have to worry about things like paying an annual vehicle registration fee and compulsory third party insurance before using it.

For one, depends on your boat.

I just saw a Nordhaven 65 footer with two Vespa style scooters on deck next to their big RIB dinghy. Crane to lift them on and off. Sure, very nice to have.

I would not consider it feasible on my boat however. One scooter takes a lot of deck space. Would be very difficult to hoist on and off my boat. Would get a lot of salt spray anywhere I could stow in on deck.

I have a folding bicycle on board for my use, and that is great and fits on the boat.

If could find a small moped or folding scooter, maybe - but still would be a pain. Full size motorcycles are for big motor yachts only IMO.

It might not be as fast or as cool, but I stick my motorized bicycle on the back of my sailboat all the time. It's not too much weight to worry about, ultra simple to work on and keep running, you can get parts everywhere in the world, and the motor cost a whopping 80$. I registered mine as a moped.

Re: Anyone carry a motorcycle or moped on board?

I carry a 49cc scooter. It does about 30mph on the flat, in most places it's classified as a bicycle so licencing and registration isn't an issue, and it's light enough to drop over the side into the dinghy with one hand, then carry it over the sand to the hard stuff. It also folds pretty flat so it's easy to store, and uses a tiny amount of fuel - the same my dinghy outboard uses, which is convenient.

I built a box that I hoist on my dingy davits for my cbr 250r, (think shipping crate) it works great, just back up to a dock, drop it down, open it up and ride off. it keeps the bike safe and dry and doesn't look all that horrible.

Looks a lot like my scooter, which cost 1/5th of that price on ebay.

Re: Anyone carry a motorcycle or moped on board?

damn.. a cbr 250? that cant be light. Im looking into carrying it on the stern of a 55ft cat....the legalities of it dont concern me at the moment. I'll have bikes too so if i cant bring it ashore.. I'll ride a bike. no big whoop. I live in california though.. land of strict emissions, so its safe to say that if its street legal here, it'll be street legal anywhere.... after a bit of paperwork of course. I'm thinking canvas cover on the bike...but how to keep the salt from eating the shiny bits? coat it with something? spray the whole thing with pam?

You may need to know some of this :-D Especially, which countries recognize which codes.

List of international vehicle registration codes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
