Anchoring Near Auckland

Hi everyone, I'm Helen and I am new to this forum. We are currently in Whangarei and heading south to Auckland in a few days. Does anyone know if there is somewhere we can anchor near the city. We prefer not to go into a marina if we can avoid the cost.
We have a 14.3m cat.

Re: Anchoring Near Auckland

Right near the city is an issue. Further out is less/no problem, like at the east coast bays or Whangaparaoa, where I am.

If you want a marina in the end, check out fairway bay marina. It's new, and looking for boats, so the price is good. It is at Whangaparaoa though, so well out of town, although there is a ferry service.

For detailed info about all the possible spots, try a post on crew.org.nz - the online home of New Zealand sailing Heaps of locals on there!

Re: Anchoring Near Auckland

West of the bridge there are a few nice little bays with access to herne bay/ponsonby - i used to keep a trimaran at coxs creek which dries off except 2-3 hrs around hightide but its a bit further west...

Re: Anchoring Near Auckland

Hi Helen,

Waiheke Island near Auckland has plenty of good anchorages and a good regular ferry service to Auckland City and to Half Moon Bay in East Auckland. I have a Cat mooring at Waiheke and a 15 mtr Cat berth at Gulf Harbour, both of which may be available depending exactly on your timing and plans.

Cheers
Lisa
