Re: Advice for new owners from Australia coming to Europe to collect a boat

Usually within a week Simon. They are pretty quick. The VHF should be no problem so long as you provided model numbers and serial numbers but any fixed AIS or VHF will be assigned MMSI numbers after the official registration is complete. This can mean you won't have DSC or AIS transmit until a week or so after official handover which can be a bit annoying if you plan to head straight offshore.

Re: Advice for new owners from Australia coming to Europe to collect a boat

Hi,

We've received our reg number, just waiting for the final letter to be posted out this week. Hopefully we'll hear back this week at some point.

Next task will be trying to work out how to enter this MMSI numbers into the devices. I can see some head scratching for that one.

Thanks,
Simon

Re: Advice for new owners from Australia coming to Europe to collect a boat

Hi Simon,

Monty is spot on. To move our boat we had to get a temporary MMSI number but will have to go through the process once ownership is handed over in June.
We found the steps easy and the staff really helpful. It took less than a week and we did the process online with a follow up phone call.

I know this is a long thread but the news from us is that we are now going to start our journey full time and in earnest when we get to France in June. No longer putting the boat on the hard or leaving somewhere but starting the adventure full on. Today I gave notice and the count down begins.

"What to pack" is now the big issue going forward for the boat.

Cheers the Miss

Re: Advice for new owners from Australia coming to Europe to collect a boat

Congrats!
Very exciting isn't it?

We picked our boat up a few weeks ago in Germany. Helped sail her back to the UK, which was an amazing adventure, and head over to Guernsey next week for the official handover.
Then over to France, over Biscay and start heading down to the Med.

I agree, space is an issue. But we found there's MORE than enough on our Hanse 385 so you guys should have no issues on a large cat. It's amazing how many storage places there are on these boats.

The question isn't so much about if it'll fit, but the quality of the storage. Some areas are way harder to get to than others. That's the tricky thing we're finding, trying to put the stuff we use most often in the best storage areas.

All the best,
Simon

Exciting is one word.
"Jumping out my skin" is four words

We are really happy and even though the next 58 days will be very busy we are thrilled to be doing it for real.

Congratulations on your boat and are you still pinching yourselves to the reality of it all. I read last week that it takes a year to adjust to the new lifestyle and find out how best to run your boat.

Cheers the Miss

It's a very weird feeling alright. At the moment there's a lot of support around us, from people fixing/adding things, our delivery guys, etc. I think it'll hit us more once we are left on our own and the reality of our situation sets in.

One thing I can say 100% is I don't miss work though.

Hi Simon,

I really like my job but I do believe I will like not doing it more!

Is there anything you took on the plane that you have thought thank goodness that came along, or anything you wish was in the bags?

Cheers the Miss

We mostly took safety equipment. Once you have your vests, epirbs, some tools, etc, that's a lot of space gone already. Try to take as many things as you can so you don't have to buy sailing things local.
The prices a lot of these places charge will make your head spin.

Congrats on the big step!

I don't know about AU but we North Americans find things electric or electronic to be expensive in Europe so we tend to bring those things with us. As Simon says, taking safety equipment makes sense too. I wouldn't try to haul home making things along though--things like pots & pans & towels & such--find a good department store & buy there only what you need, and then add to that as you determine the need. It's your new home--enjoy setting her up to be just that!

We recall they/AMSA were pretty quick with issuing our MMSI, although it was a while back so we couldn't put a time frame on it. We also recall,, however, that there may've been some sort of glitch with the online process which prompted us to call AMSA and, as on every other time we approached them, it all went very smoothly from there.
