the two books I quoted here:

are accounts, by two different people aboard the same upturned trimaran, upturned for 119 days. Read these two books, you'll have a very good idea exactly what life in an upturned multihull is like.

No because the boat has positive floatation, so the escape hatch will stay in it's relative position to the waterline whether it lets in large amounts of water or air or not.
...and then again, how do you get oxygen into the hull?
Maybe just leave the hatch open for ventilation? Wouldn't help with the hypothermia though.
How do you keep from getting hypothermic swimming around in there? How do you deal with the possibility of diesel fuel slopping around in there?
I think you would need a dedicated or at least thought out compartment of some sort, as others here have suggested. Failing that climb into a closet or under a berth or something? Might help to keep you dry and protect you from any debris sloshing about in high waves.
If you prefer to be outside, again, how do you deal with hypothermia? How do you secure yourself to a slick inverted hull in any kind of seas? How do you get potable water? How do you get food?
I think being tethered to the boat outside would be a terrible idea in severe conditions. Noone wants to go on a foredeck in those conditions because of the danger, can you imagine trying to exist clinging to a flipped hull? I don't think it would end well. Tethering a raft to the boat could also end poorly, the raft could easily be lifted and slammed into the hulls by waves with you in it.
I think there are a number of unanswered questions about remaining with a capsized cat versus getting in a raft. Maybe some of you have answers?
|
I would think people with multis would have put a lot of thought into this and will have a lot to say on these issues. Being a monohuller who's never flipped a multi that wasn't a beach cat, I'm just guessing. But I agree that there are unanswered questions.

Re: A True End to the Multi vs Mono Debate
A flipped multi may or may not offer you protection in a disaster.
There is no way anyone could/would have prior knowledge of how such a craft will float once flipped, Has the mast stayed there? What are the conditions? Way to many permutations.
It may or may not offer refuge.
A Mono also may float afterwards offering some shelter however the odds aren't as high as the cat.
Anyone who says that an overturned cat will offer a habitable cabin after such an event may be deluding themselves. IMHO only.

Another debate about Multi vs Mono, and once again started by a multi owner... Seems to me that if multi owners believe that they have something to prove then they do indeed have something to prove!

Apologies if you are offended i never saw any MULTI vs MONO's in the postings, if anything i saw healthy discussion regarding what a multi may offer in a disaster?
Cheers Frank

And that's the truth to it all, the car don't make the man and nor does the boat. It's a mode of transport not a religion.....
Pillum... cheers mate.

Ah hah! They had 6 foot long barbecues on the transoms of their vessels! Now we know why catamarans were invented in the Pacific. They needed the wide beam that only a multihull could provide. Multihulls were invented so that "long pig" could be cooked on board!
That, Ladies and Gentlemen, should definitely put the debate to rest.
Multihull sailors are cannibals.
Thanks L4us, for the historical insight.

Re: A True End to the Multi vs Mono Debate
The true end will only come when all the Monos have sunk - or all the Multi's have flipped. In the meantime, there is CF .
Personally I have always chosen my boats on the likelihood of not having a fairly predictable possibility turn into a catastrophy, rather than which is best (lol!) to survive the catastrophy (like a hole in the hull - or a strong gust of wind ).
But everyone gets to make own choices .

So let me get the logic of your argument, One multi person starts a joke thread, based on a cartoon, and that means that all multi owners now have something to prove.
And you reckon you're confused, my gast is absolutely flabbered.
