You must be reading different posts from me. I haven't seen anyone suggest it would be luxurious.

However, with some planning a reasonably dry, and RELATIVELY warm,( ie. Out of the weather.) compartment can be set up.

For instance, most boats have watertight compartments under the forward bunks. Put a hatch in those and they could be viable as a short term place to survive.

I do happen to believe it would be safer than a liferaft. People have done it, and survived. The bulkheads don't seem to have blown out, and the crew dont seem to have been pulverised. In fact one crew survived so well for around 3 months, the authorities initially didn't believe they had even been adrift.

I've done liferaft training. They are hell on earth.

If the original cartoon is re-posted with offers of a caption i'm sure it will reach 10 plus pages?

Re: A true end to the multi vs mono debate

What a bunch of wusses. On April 5, 1789, Captain William Bligh and eighteen others were set adrift from HMS Bounty in a 23' open boat with a beam of 6' 9" and a draft of 2' 9". Onboard they had 32 pounds of pork, 150 pounds of bread, six quarts of rum, six bottles of wine and 28 gallons of water. After one of the men were stoned to death by natives when they attempted to stop at an island for provisions they sailed and rowed more than 3,600 miles in 47 days to their planned destination. They were chased by cannibals along the way. Capt. Bligh navigated with only a quadrant and timepiece.

Re: A True End to the Multi vs Mono Debate

I'm wondering if there is a database that keeps track of how many plaesure sailing craft have sunk?

Bob -
You can acquire a copy of the original cartoon and several others (all by Jo Hudson) by purchasing "The case for the cruising trimaran" by Jim Brown. Jim's book is now out in the 3rd edition and available from Amazon.

Re: A True End to the Multi vs Mono Debate

How do you get oxygen into the hull of an overturned cat? Wouldn't opening the escape hatch let air out and water in until the escape hatch is just below the surface of the water? ...and then again, how do you get oxygen into the hull? How do you keep from getting hypothermic swimming around in there? How do you deal with the possibility of diesel fuel slopping around in there?

If you prefer to be outside, again, how do you deal with hypothermia? How do you secure yourself to a slick inverted hull in any kind of seas? How do you get potable water? How do you get food?

I think there are a number of unanswered questions about remaining with a capsized cat versus getting in a raft. Maybe some of you have answers?

Re: A True End to the Multi vs Mono Debate

How do you know what scenario will exist ?? Hence regard an overturned multi as a large piece of flotsom not a lifeboat......Just something that is large to try to hang onto, not a life pod!
