What do you guys think of the 88 catana in hawaii, also any thoughts on the solaris in morrow bay. I like the catanas alot but don't know about onw this age it seems like a good price. If neither of these go well probably will buy a mono. Thanks again for all the help

I would go with the Catana 40. I believe its a Crowther design. It should sail quite well. It will not have the interior space of many new 40 footers, but will make up in performance. Plenty of space for boards as well.

From your other posts I think the Catan would be a good surf cat, not the room of more modern boats but like tnkflakbait said she will sail fast....

I chartered a Catana 40 in the Med 13 years ago for a two week family holiday - two grown ups and a 3 year old child could handle her easily. I liked the layout, but was disappointed with her speed performance in the predominantly lighter winds we encountered - got beaten by cruising monohulls! I believe there are two Catana 40s currently on the market, in my opinion they are much too expensive for what they are and offer.

Hi people

My first post on this site

I've recently emailed the broker about the Catana 40 in Hawaii. Looks like it has potential as a Pacific cruiser. Does anyone know the boat or have any good news or horror stories about the Catana 40's construction etc?

My current boat is a 35' monohull with 50,000 ocean miles under its keel (only 2,000 are mine so far), and I'm looking for something a bit faster and with more room. I've been looking at monohulls but some cruising friends have been trying to convert me.

Cheers

I am now the very proud owner of the Catana 40 in Hawaii.

I am very, very pleased with it and it's sailing performance ..... especially up-wind.

Downwind she flies ..... and with those flaired bows there is a lot of reserve buoyancy against pitch-poling and pitching.

As for value ...... This Catana is better than any FP or St Francis for construction, sailing ability, and general quality. It's a different beast entirely. How would I price that with more modern Catana's 410's being in excess of $300,000?

The lack of headroom in accessing the hull accommodation has taken a bit of getting use to, but I seriously dont notice it anymore.

The only boat I might swap it for would be an Outremer.

We're now heading for Canada and then down to Mexico, with NZ planned for next season.

Cheers
