I have a large
family and am dreaming about a 6-month
cruise in a year or so (still dream stage; I have an awful lot of ducks to line up before I get there!)
But while I’m dreaming, I’m trying to compare catamarans and finding it rather confusing for a beginner. I see 38’ boats that are set up with berths for 10 and 2 heads, which seems nearly ideal for my needs and the
price of these cats can more than double by going up just a few feet. I have a sneaking suspicion I’ll overload it pretty quickly with my crew.
What are the real differences between the sizes of catamarans?
What are you getting or giving up when you move from one step to another?
If you see the
displacement listed, how can you determine the amount of available payload?
It looks like
leopard has a 38, 39, and a 40 as three different models!
Currently, this is the one that looks like it might be in the realm of possibilities, but my
budget is pretty well maxed out at $150k, (which doesn’t leave a lot of room with catamarans!) I don’t know what red
flags to look for.
