I have no real idea since I have only chartered an L40 and spent 4 hours motoring into 30+k mess in the Whitsunday Passage but who says a 6m beam is narrow?

Clearly they have never looked at a Prout 37 with a 4.5m beam !

The question is, Who told you this? There are a lot of these boats out there. Look on the R&C forum here or the Yahoo owners group for Leopard

Well I can't see that it's a bad boat if it won boat of the year in 2010

I think you made a good purchase. There are lots of naysayers out there. The internet is full of them and the world too!

If you like the boat, if it works for your family, its all good. Every boat is a compromise, its how the boat work for you and yours that makes it right.

Re: 2010 Leopard 38

I sailed a 2011 Leopard 39, which is the same boat (the only difference between the 2010 L38 and the 2011-2015 L39 is that the cockpit roof on the 39 is directly attached to the salon roof without a space in between). It certainly seemed safe to me. We didn't have any waves or bad weather, however, all the Leopards are sailed from South Africa to their destination in the US, Europe, or Oz, so unless you bought it directly from the dealer in South Africa, it's already crossed an ocean and proved it's seaworthy.

And it certainly doesn't look too narrow. It has a length/beam ratio of 1.89. Compare that to the Gemini 105mc which is a bit narrow with a length to beam ratio of 2.39, yet it's still a fine boat.

I am in the process of purchasing a 2010 38 as well. I have sailed the L38 as well as similar sized Lagoons, FPs and have not experienced what your source suggested. I have owned a cat with a much narrower beam and didn't with it either.

Namdes, R&C built around 200 of these boats - I doubt they would have continued to produced so many if they were "a piece of S....t". They are actually well designed, well built and sail very well. Having delivered a number of them I can honestly say they are good sailing cats and as safe as any small cat can be. Enjoy your boat!

Mikey, you been in the pub? Leopard has never been in St Francis! They have been in Cape Town all their manufacturing lives. Leopard catamarans are manufactured by Robertson and Caine and not St Francis Marine.
