1979 Formosa 34

I am looking at a 1979 Formosa 34. This is not the William Garden designed Formosas, but the more updated center cockpit designed boat. Does anyone know anything about this model? I am having trouble finding information on the internet about this boat. All help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Is the Formasa 34 a multihull? Have not heard of it.

I owned one for a few years. Where is the one you are looking at?

Re: 1979 Formosa 34

It's a Bob Perry design I believe. That would be one of the few positives I would recall though. Typical Formosa or far east construction heavy resin ratios make for a weaker laminate and a heavier one. Poor deck construction made mostly of chopped strand matte. I had lots of cracks that I thought were just gelcoat but ended up going right through the entire laminate. Teak decks leaked like a sieve due to the thousands of screws used to penetrate an otherwise decent fiberglass deck below them. Beautiful doors and brass work inside though. I thought it was a great floor plan and by far the roomiest 34ft boat you'll ever find. My bulkheads were rotting and the fiberglass tabbing pulling loose due to the leaking decks.

The cabin top where the mast step sits had very high moisture due to small drains in the mast step clogging. Once water gets in it runs all over the laminate as strips of wood were used instead of proper end grain Balsa. Originally I believe they were drawn with a keel stepped mast but the company changed it to deck stepped and shortened the rig. With that they also aren't the speediest of sailors with a small rig for a 34 and a very small mainsail size.
