Yanmar 3gm 22 hp

I am new member and a long time boater power and sail and I Just brought a 1985 Pearson sailboat, with a yanmar 22 hp, I had a diesel mechanic change the oil and all the filters, she had a slight leak on the water pump, the mechanic said that for a 24 hour trip the engine would be ok but plan on replacing the water in the near future. While bringing her home to the Tampa area from Marco Island the engine quit after 16 hours. The exhaust made a belching sound with a little white smoke.
I attempted to start it 8 or 9 times; it would turn over but not start.
Made sure there was fuel in the tank and even bled the fuel line with the finger pump on the engine, could not get any fuel. I checked the dips tick and the oil was ok no water, I hope I did not damage the engine due to leaving the thru hole open on the water intake. Anyone have any ideas, Thanks John

Hi john, and welcome.
Well as you said you can't get fuel to the engine.Thats why its not running, so did the filter get pluged up,or a problem with the fuel pump.I guess those two are a good place to start.
