Yacht type choice - Cultural differences?

Well.. those stairs are more conservative than something Newbridge Yachts came out with back in the '80's.. I think it was called the Newbridge Pilot.. and that was a 26ftr..

I don't understand why. That looks like an interior coming from the first decades of the XX century and it looks older styled as the boat itself but some really like living in old styled spaces.

Even on houses, even if today it is much less common, on the 50's and 60's many people of the upper classes like to have Georgian and Queen Anne style furniture decoration. Not a big difference in what regards liking living on a past ambiance. I agree with Sandero, to each his own, even if today very few would like that style as an interior for a sailboat.



That boat is just a bit more on the rustic side in what regards style.

Thats not what I call a dungeon..Boats like CTs ,Westsails those type feel as if you are going into the basement..I get a bit of cabin fever if I hang out to long below decks on those..

I think that sums it up, and also owners of older long keel cruisers seem to talk more and do more fitting out and planning for journies. There are many people buying fast modern fin keel boats and just heading off without all the hard work of maintaining an older boat.

It seems to me that you've made an important observation with much truth regarding these many owners of old boats (of any keel design) that spend their time outfitting, repairing, planning, maintaining,etc. I return to different ports on the US East Coast and see them year after year with the same status.

I think there are other issues that keep them from actual cruising,- family, friends, land-based commitments, insecurity, ....? I don't know the answer, but some people spend their total boat ownership years caring for the boat and the plan, but not following through with the cruising.

I can't find fault with this. Maybe, for them, the dream is more important than the action. It also makes since to work with a cheap older boat if your style is to plan and dream while not finishing. I know one guy that spent about ten years planning and refitting in Jacksonville and then "cruised" about 100 miles down the coast were he has settled into another ten years of planning and refitting. .........'he seems happy.

Some of us are just happy to be on a boat, where ever it is.

But seriously, my situation is such that not wanting to do solo long distance sailing and my g/f, while a good sport and will tag along on short overnights, is not really the type who could live a cruising lifestyle So I compensate my sailing yearnings by hitching offshore rides with friends whenever offered and by contending myself with some local sailing trips. Closer to retirement I'll probably settle as a liveaboard somewhere in Florida and if that place turns unfriendly to or too expensive for liveaboards, perhaps some place else. I consider those who found their second nautical half and are able to pick up and go to be very lucky indeed.
