My condolences to the family of the Policia Maritima official who died. No death is a good death... however to die while trying to save others is at the very least an extremely Honourable way to go...
RESPECT...

Cannot get the video link up here so have posted it on my FB page..
Boatman Phil

Re: Yacht broaches

"LISBON -- Local media reported that two people were killed and six others were hospitalized after a botched rescue operation for a sailing yacht that capsized off the Portuguese coast near Figueira da Foz. Maritime Police issued a statement saying that the incident took place on Cabedelo beach on Wednesday night. One of the casualties was one of five crewmen of the "Meri Tuuli" and the other was a Maritime Police officer on board a rescue vessel which also sank. The distress signal was made at about 6:00 p.m. and the maritime agency in the area immediately initiated a rescue mission using a speedboat from a lifeguard station and another from the Maritime Police. The rescue operation was hampered by very rough conditions and the police speed boat eventually capsized. A spokesman for the Maritime Police said five crewmen of the yacht and three officers were rescued; however, a crewman and an officer were declared dead on the beach. The spokesman added that two crew members of the yacht suffered traumatic injuries, while the other two survivors and two officers of the Marine Police have symptoms of hypothermia."

Seems I misunderstood parts of the report... fast Portuguese..
One rescuer and the skipper of the yacht died... botched rescue seems harsh knowing the area and what the sea's can be like.. likely learn more once the crew are out of hospital.

Sorry to hear about the loss of life. Took a look of the area on google earth looks like they were so close to getting to safety too. Engine problem? Another reminder you can die just as easily in sight of land as you can in the middle of the ocean.

Most of the ports on the W coast are at river mouths and these incidences are quite common for those without local knowledge.. though not often with such fatal results.. having ridden in myself on a 5metre swell I can assure you watching your DS going down as you surf in is knee trembling... with 3ft draft mine went down to 0.9m on one approach and I expected to pitchpole any second... obviously I didn't.. but it was very much touch and go...
PS: got a bollocking as they'd closed the port and had the ball's up at the end of the breakwater

Re: Yacht Broaches

I've heard if before, but never knew what it meant.

bollock

noun
1. one of the two male reproductive glands that produce spermatozoa and secrete androgens; "she kicked him in the balls and got away" [syn: testis]

Basically it means an official/unofficial dressing down by someone in authority...

pirate Re: Yacht Broaches

I've learnt the boat and crew are German.. no more news as such here... but there could very well be some stuff on German sailing site's about this.. if so we'd be keen to learn about the circumstances of the incident... hitting the bar... engine failure at a critical moment..
Any German speakers..?
German Phil.. are you there...?

Indeed, very common expression over here.

Sorry to hear about the loss of life. Took note of the comments regarding swells for future reference!
