Would You Buy a Hans Christian 33?

I want an HC33. Love the looks, long waterline, short overhangs, heavy displacement and Pullman birth. Also like the shower stall and the head forward. I hate V-births. But I also hate all that exterior wood trim and teak decks. I'm lazy and don't want a maintenance nightmare or waterlogged decks. They can also get rot in the bow sprit and the Samson posts , and I would much prefer external chainplates. Yes, I know they are slow in light airs but good sails can help that. So would you buy one?

A friend once told me a story about blind dates, ending with: "You know you've got nothin' when they say - "She's got a good personality!""

If thats what gets you excited then why not buy one. Asking that question is liking us to chose your next wife.
The build quality is ok, but for me all that teak and wasted space by being a double ender is not my thing.
Cheers

I would not and based on your question, you may be happier with another boat. Consider a Cape George if you like that style.

There was a nice one next to us in San Fran. You wouldn't go anywhere in it but it was a nice looking boat.

Re: Would You Buy a Hans Christian 33?

Without expressing bias, they're too much work for a weekend sailor with all that teak. Much more suited for long distance cruising (where plenty of time on one's hands makes wood care almost fun) which is what they were designed for. They're also not as slow as some seem to think in light airs with their cutter rig and actually handle reasonably nimbly in close quarters. Otoh, dinghy storage is a pain, the cockpit is tiny and the batteries are difficult to access being located at the bottom of the rear locker. This latter point is a gripe of mine as it presents a safety issue, imo.

Oh, and you'll also pay inflated marina rates because LOA is something like 42 ft.

No, not a chance. But then I'm in love with sailing and I want a boat which comes alive in 10 knots of wind and can beat off a lee shore and you can set a kite in something less than 45 minutes.

Depends on what you're in it for.
