World's Largest Sailing Yacht A
The World's Largest Private Sailing Yacht! "S/Y A"
This newly released video shows the world's largest privately owned sail assisted motor yacht (not a cruise ship) that is commonly called "S/Y A" (simply the first initial of the owner's name).
It is HUGE. Its length is 469 feet! Its mast height is 330 feet! It has a crew of 54. It displaces 12,700 tons! It has a draft of 26 feet and a beam of 82 feet and 8 decks. It was designed by Philippe Starck. The masts are free standing carbon fiber. It has a 3,747 m2 (40,330 sq ft) 3-mast schooner rig.
But, if you watch this video it first appears like a computer graphic or animation, because this boat is designed so differently (angular shapes, very large and high hull) and because the scale seems wrong to our eyes when we see the boat and the surface of the water. It looks like a CGI boat. But, this is real. (Or is it "Unreal?")
The size of those sails and the scale of the boat is hard to grasp until one sees the small human figures (crew) at the end of the boom or up the mast! This sailboat is HUGE!
The owner of this boat is Andrey Melnichenko, (hence the initial "A"), a notorious Russian Billionaire.

The boat is real. The video is real.
And, the reason for this thread is self evident: The World's Largest Sailing Yacht.

Both these boats designed by Phillippe Starck, and he gets paid to design boats, unbelievable.

Re: World's Largest Sailing Yacht A
That's what is happening if gazillionaires with a distinct lack of taste let a rogue furniture designer go wild instead of involving someone with proper experience in the field.
His other yacht "A" is from the same "designer".
And yes I do not like Venus either.
What a disgrace to yacht design.

Re: World's Largest Sailing Yacht A
So to me, the question is, WHY? Obviously the sails alone aren't ever going to drive this boat. So at best the rig might reduce the fuel bills slightly. But the owners could afford any fuel bills anyway. And the rig will likely never pay for itself.
Why bother with the rig/sails, the then necessary keel with it's additional draught both of which restrict where you can go...
A straight motor yacht would seem a far more sensible boat IMO.

World's Largest Sailing Yacht A
A friend works at Americus Ga's airport, he was flying when two Global Express "business" jets called in on the approach and landed, parking nose to nose so that nobody else could use the ramp.
Bill Gates flew in to give Jimmy Carter a Birthday card. I guess he needed the second Global Express just in case the first broke down?

Re: World's Largest Sailing Yacht A
Great, curiosity got the better of me and I threw up in my mouth. That abomination should be a sin. The real issue I have with the nightmare is it masquerading as a sailboat. At best it is a motor boat trying to imitate a sail boat. If it requires power to operate basic sailing systems up to and including winches it is a power boat. That thing would be dead in the water without enough megawatts to power a small city. Call me a purist, an anachronism or caveman if you will, but when something burns more fuel leaving the dock than I will in a lifetime of sailing it ain't a sailboat.

Re: World's Largest Sailing Yacht A
When you have that much money you need to look for things to spend it on.
Great way to employ lots of skilled workers in some little maritime town.
Whats not to like about it.
Most of us will never ever see the real boat in our lifetime, except on YouTube.
