World Cruising with Hunter 23

There's probably someone out there who's circumnavigated in a Hunter 23, but it seems to me the seamanship would have to make up for the boat's shortcomings, as well as basically re-building all the boat's major systems as already mentioned. Don't underestimate the cost and time associated with a major refit of even a small boat.

Only other thing I got..I was new to sailing a few years back and have managed to find plenty of adventure (and time spent refitting) without having to look very hard.

The standard analogy is that boat's are like tools..find, make or refit the right one for the job.

Howdy!

I have always been interested in the small boats used by some for long voyages and ocean crossing.

My suggestions:

1. When you post on this forum, first indicate your sailing experience and limitations (budget).

2. Go to Youtube and search for videos about the Jester Challenge and Ming Ming or Roger Taylor (an experienced singlehanded sailor who uses small boats modified for North Atlantic crossing).

Enjoy the boat you have learn to sail if you haven't already. Plenty of things can be learned about navigation and sailing abilities with that boat. Just don't try and make it something it isn't. There are many boats on the Bluewaterboats.org list that can be had well below $10k.

I currently have a Columbia 29 which is on that list, that with a little beefing up of the big windows and some gear would do just fine. If you looking for old and cheap boats there is also the Pearson Vanguard which would do with some work as well. If you like Hunters look at the Cherubini (sp?) designed Hunter 37 cutter. For under $20k you get a well built great handling boat. I just saw one in my area sell for under $14k in great shape with a new diesel. There is also a earlier Cherubini Hunter 30 I believe that you should be able to find under $10k. However there are a lot of decent boats around with better initial quality than Hunters going for similar prices. Don't get stuck on a brand.

I've heard that a San Juan 24 is an excellent offshore drifter cruiser.

(I am not being serious - get a decent boat to cross an ocean)

Having done the W-E crossing a few times I'd agree with the folk who say... "Find a better boat..."
The first few hundred miles to the Azores are on beat fighting a current... the other way via Bermuda I would not recommend in that 23..
There's enuf big boats getting beat up without you..

I friend in FL a year ago bought Niagara 35 for $12K. It needed some work which he partially did himself and partially contracted out. Invested all together probably $3-5K plus his time. Recently, after a year of sailing her, he decided that she was too small for his needs and few weeks ago sold her for just under $20K to a European guy who is taking her to Europe as we speak. The buyer being from a Euro country was ecstatic to get her so cheaply but was bumming about anticipated additional import duties, etc.
