I bought a second hand fiberglass dinghy
about two years ago; it was minus rigging
. After a lot of internet research
, I guesses it was a Wittholz Dinghy
design. This I confirmed after I bought Wittholz's 11' Dinghy plans from Wooden Boat Magazine. I subsequently rigged it with a mast
and sail that were identical to the plans.
I wanted to register it, but I can find no manufacturers tag anywhere. The seller didn't have a paper trail either -- he claimed he inherited it from a family member
. Since the cubby covers are a style that is no longer made, I'm guessing it may be thirty or more years old, before the manufacturers plate was mandatory, or was purchased as a bare hull
. The rudder
that came with it are not to Wittholz's scantlings, and not the same level of workmanship as the hull
(I have since added my own). My guess is that it may never have been completed enough to sail.
Does anyone know of any yard that manufactured fiberglass
hulls, or completed dinghies, from the Wittholz design?
She is a delight to sail now, and I may never use power, but i would like to have the option of registering it anyways. I'm also interested in meeting other Wittholz's 11' Dinghy sailors.
