Wind tells

Any ideas on how to install wind tells (oiled yarn?) or anything else without having to have the marina do it with a crane or purchasing a $300 bosuns chair ?

I'm all ears ?

Could you please explain the expression, "wind tells?"

We use streamers on our capshrouds and back stay for visual aids sailing, but have an electronic wind instrument, as well. If you mean a "windex", little aluminum guy with an arrow that points between a "v" with a mounting bracket, yes, you'll have to get to the masthead, either aloft or with the mast out. Consider borrowing or hiring a bosun's chair, or use a climbing harness. If you're a DIY kind of guy, you'll want a good one some time, anyhow.

Oiled yarn? are you talking about ticklers? They go on the sails. DRop the sails, afix the ticklers (glue on the back) raise the sails and you're done. A windex, as Ann says, requires you to go to the top of the mast.

Buy a harness - you'll need it again. If not, a cheap bosun chair doesn't cost much. If you don't mind risking your life - a fender CAN be used as an emergency bosun's chair

Disclaimer - do not try this at home - I didn't suggest you do it, I merely observed that a fender could be used in an emergency

300 bucks for a bosun's chair? I guess if you want to you could spend that much...

But for the fiscally challenged, a bit of stout plank, perhaps 8 to 10 inches wide and long enough for your bum to sit comfortably upon it, some 1/2 inch or so line to make little "bridles" at each end that meet in a hefty steel ring at about chest height, all spliced neatly together and you have what most folks used for years to go aloft.

You can pimp it up with a padded seat and perhaps a strap across the back to lean against, even a crotch strap to keep you from sliding out, but for short trips and simple jobs the basic "swing seat" will get the job done.

For the more affluent, a trip to a climbing shop will show you some fairly inexpensive climbing harnesses that are likely safer (in that they are professionally built and sold, with liability issues addressed) and not terribly dear. Many riggers use them (maybe not the bottom of the line type that are cheap); I find them uncomfortable for long times aloft.

But, the point is you can get up the mast for far less than 300 bucks!

Use the tape from an old VCR cartridge. Tie it to your shrouds, It will only last a couple weeks in wind . But easy to replace and very sensitive

Old VCR tape also works well to keep the birds off of boat when you are away

even better is tape from a cassette, thinner and lighter so it responds faster.
