Re: Why do monohulls have sails?

Why is it that every cruiser dinghy I see is motoring? They all have paddles but never use them?

Idiotic thread?
More like ironic genious!

Re: Why do monohulls have sails?

I put the sails up because they look cool with my double breasted blue blazer and captain hat...but some folks are suspicious about my shorts...I figure if its good enough for Angus Young it's good enough for me.

Re: Why do monohulls have sails?

I think a lot of people here just need to get out on the water.

And, chill.

Re: Why do monohulls have sails?

Sails look pretty and they fill nicely when we put the motor on.
If there is too much wind they flap too much and do not look as pretty, plus the noise of all that flapping keeps me awake, thus we motor to a lovely gentle hum. Aah for the comforting throb of the diesel.
It has been said that 'Saaremaa' means motor sailor.
Cheers Michael

Why do SINGLED HANDED Oysters AND Hunters motor 100% of the time? I don't get it.

Re: Why do monohulls have sails?

Really, the sails on monohulls are just a side-effect from having the mast, which is used to the get the antenna up high so they can see AIS targets at longer range.

Of course, it helps the multihullers, we can turn around and look behind us as we sail by and feel smug and superior for much longer since the mast and sails keep the mono visible in our wake for much longer. Really, they do it just to stroke our ego Very nice of them.

Re: Why do monohulls have sails?

i think it is because here in the Med, they have their mind set on getting to that crowded anchorage before you. As soon as they see you sailing in, its down sails and full steam ahead. Of course , being in a cat there is no race, we just pull up inside them anyway in the shallows . Someone should point that out to them, it would save a lot of angst.

Re: Why do monohulls have sails?

Why do so many cat sailors spend most of their time on the hook or docked? Why do folks with convertibles drive around with the top up? Why do many boat owners find perfect happiness with their floating condos tied to the dock? Why do many full time cruisers look down on day sailors and castigate racers? Do motorcyclists buy bikes just so they can wear the clothes? Why do so many people prefer vanilla ice cream? Why do some folks ask questions that are none of their business?

Re: Why do monohulls have sails?

The answers are thus:

1) mono owners are soft - the only reason they own a sailboat at all is for the cozyness.
2) mono owners by being soft are naturally lazy.
3) lazy boat owners do not necessarily learn to sail. They just want a cozy space to party and have friends aboard.
4) mono actually sail very slow, so lazy sailors do not want to bother putting up the sails to only arrive 8 hours later and take it all down again. Waste of time. Just motor.

Please send me lots of money for my Caribbean Boat Fund. I would like a PSC, Ovni, IP, Fisher, Southerly. I will sail it. Promise. i will show you how for FREE.

Thank you

Re: Why do monohulls have sails?

Monos have sails in order to show Cat owners what sailing looks like underway.

Re: Why do monohulls have sails?

After reading this thread I feel like I have backed up in time....I'm sitting in the elementary school playground listening to the other boys bragging about who's Dad is tougher.
Really fellows... do your insecurities run so deep that we can have this many posts over two threads?

It's something they do in Queensland to help pass the time. Once you get the hang of it the pay can be pretty good too.
