Why are the Amel Super Maramu SO ugly?

No, I'm not actually talking about the exterior design of the boat. I've heard some don't like it but I don't mind.

I'm referring to the interior. Often bright blue floor. Yellow sink. Just ugly cushions. Etc.

The more I read the more I feel like an Amel Super Maramu is a great boat and possibly a good fit for me. But the more I look at them on Yachtworld the more disgusted I get

How can someone design such a functional and smart boat without any sense for esthetics?

Or have you ever seen a good looking Amel? Prove me wrong.

Bonus question: What other boats could replace the Amel Super Maramu?

Re: Why are the Amel Super Maramu SO ugly?

I have always thought that the super Amels interiors looked like some corp lawyers office. Dark modern wood and too many wine storage lockers. Nice boats though.

Have you thought about the Boreal 53 ? European boat of the year last year. We own the Boreal 44 and it is the best boat we have owned in 40 plus years of sailing. A bit of a wait for one though but they are going from 6 boats a year to 10 soon.

Cheers

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder.

How could someone in Sweden object to Blue and Yellow as colors?

All the Amels I have seen online looked nice to me, inside and out. But then I also like Scandinavian design.

Sweden's flag is blue and yellow :;

Amel does so many things differently, I imagine any odd ball exteriors are just another way to stand out from the crowd. So I'm going to say it's likely marketing!

Probably because in his last years, Henri Amel was nearly blind. His marketing team wanted to make some changes to update the boat, but he wouldn't have it. After his death, the new 54' design accomplished some significant modernization. But, you either love them or hate them - not too much in between!

Ugly is a personal thing.

You can always replace the interior bits.

So... You think the 1970's gold sink clashes with Grandma's upholstery and the faux teak adhesive deck?

Haha yeah. But the ocean blue plastic floor makes it all come together.

The Amel boats are certainly very marine, safe and spacious.
They are also very practical and the maintenance is easy.
The design of the hull and the interior is outdated and needs to be modernized.
There are boats as valid and secure, much more beautiful and more performing for example Najad and Halberg Rassy

I think they are kinda ugly inside and out. But then so are fishing boats. Maybe practicality is their strong point.

The answer is simple, the designer, builder, is legally blind. He enjoyed sailing until late in life so everything is easy to control without the necessity of strong muscles.
