Re: Who is your Favorite Boating Manufacturer

Hinkley and old Swans... In 50 years of boating I've never seen a level of fit and finish that the old Hinkley's had. I once read that a 42 Southwester had 14,000 man-hours in it... making it a 'steal' at 340US$

they made and maintained so many great boats that they put their sail division out of business... too many great used models to buy...oh well... I'll buy another someday... looking at a B40 yawl in retirement?

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Halberg Rassey? I like 'em having sailed on Celestialsailor's.

However, I'm budgeted more for a Catalina if I were ever to buy again.

Re: Who is your Favorite Boating Manufacturer

Once we were tied to the fuel dock near Charlotte Amalie on a charter and up pulled a splendid Oyster 53. Wife and I were absolute stereotypes of the slack-jawed charter-boat hoi polloi. On deck was a rather smartly dressed gentleman looking as clean and refreshed as if he had just emerged from a spa. We asked where he was coming from.

Portsmouth.

For that moment, at least, our favorite boat was the Oyster 53.

Whatever boat I own at the time. I've had and loved jeanneau, Kettenburg (wood), Catalina (2) Stephens (wood), Ericsson and Pearson.

Re: Who is your Favorite Boating Manufacturer

I do not like boats from manufactures. I prefer them from boatyards.

I like Hutting and K&M boats very much.

I somewhat like Morris, Rustler, HR, Contest, etc., but sure they are second best.

Sabre because they produced quasi high end builds at a mid-level cost but unfortunately they stopped manufacturing sailboats last year.

Re: Who is your Favorite Boating Manufacturer

The manufacture that fit our needs is the French company Boreal.
1) Aluminum
2) Centerboard, about a meter with board up.
3) Modern design that is made for ocean cruising in comfort but pretty fast.
4) Great tankage, water and fuel 600 litters each.
5) Seaworthy as they go, strong with no through deck fitting everything welded on deck and re enforced below.
6) Boreal was eager to put most of our ideas into the boat.
7) Can beach it if you feel the need.
8) Not a bad looking boat.

Other boats the wife and I like. Outbounds, Shanons, Mason 44, Pogo's Cape George. These all would fit our needs as we get older except the Pogo. But if I was 30 years old I would go for the Pogo and fly across oceans.
Boats disappointed in, New HR's, Ok for coastal cruising but sold out bluewater cruising. Far less storage space than they should have, plus poorer build than the old days.

Cheers
