Pressure relief valve on the calorifier is another source of intermittent water leaks.

Does your refrigerator drain to the bilge? That is quite common. It can put out a good bit of water.

A bit of a digression, but might point you in the right direction and save you some stress-

Last week while on vacation on a boisterous reach, 20 kts and 4-6 footers the admiral left the cockpit to make us a snack. Upon descending the ladder she turned to me with her big blue eyes as round as saucers and told me in a shaking voice "we have a really big problem"-she calm under stress, but I could her her fear. Snapping on the pilot, I looked below to see water an inch above the access hatch over the four foot deep bilge! Heart rate accellerated quickly-this boat is new to me and I was not quite prepared to lose her. I'd been postponing repacking the leaking rudder and prop stuffing box until haulout. Pumps never came on. I sent her above deck to work the manual pump which she did with... enthusiasm. After pulling intact fuses and resetting breakers, I lifted the floorboard and found...nothing.

Hose let go on the accumulater on freshwater side and the pump dutifully emptied our 50 gallon bow tank under the galley sink-it's next to the bilge cover. Cover fits tightly so little had time to seep below.

I told her next time were sinking to taste it first.

Spread newspaper.

Better yet, go to the newspaper publisher and buy an "end roll". Maybe 50 cents. It's newspaper without news print, on a roll.

How much water are we talking about.. and over what period of time.. water in the bilge can accumulate purely from condensation in the right conditions.. apart from the other things mentioned previously.
Just saying "There's water in my bilge..!!" is about as illuminating as a dead light bulb.

Ok, cpt 7t7, First thought is a stuffing box leak. Without your posting what kind of a boat it is, what kind of a stuffing box, it is hard to say. Being as it's Marina Del Rey, I'll bet it's not from rain, so let's consider options, bearing in mind that all leaks lead to the lowest part of the bilge.

Assuming that no ports have been left open (in case of mythical rain, as it is not yet november) ask yourself what else drains there. So, possibly a loose hose clamp somewhere. Possibly from a through-hull fitting, possibly from the engine, possibly from head or galley sink, possibly from plumbed toilet, if any. The big deal here is that water flows down, so that it is relatively easy to trace. Some people recommend using toilet tissue to trace drips. If you place some under the hose clamps you have, soon you will find some damp ones. If you just go and tighten all the clamps, you won't learn where the leak was coming from. Look for rust tracks, or crystalline tracks, from salt crystals, if it's salt water leaking.


Have fun, you are capable of figuring this out. Newtonian physics are your friend. Pls. forgive typos, had a cataract out today, and am still a bit blind.

Thank you, Ann.
It's not from stuffing box since repacked about a month ago. During that time, found ruptured bilge hose and replaced, too.
I don't see any trace of water from out side.
I start suspecting the bilge hose closer to the behind pump.
I will go look tomorrow.

It's about 1 1/2 inch deep in 2.5' x .3' area over the keel fin. Duration of time is about a week.
Not high to reach the pump's sensor.

While reading this thread i thought maybe anti syphon stuck and engine is filling and spilling. Then thought no, he would have noticed when he checked the oil. or at least mentioned oil in the bilge .But you never know.
