Re: When You Bought Yours First Boat....

I chartered several boats of different makes, sizes, below deck layouts, and sail configurations over 20+ years.

I wanted a boat that I could single hand but was large enough to live aboard. The boat that I bought was visually appealing, was a quality builder, and I felt comfortable on it. The price was low enough that I could take a total loss on it and not be devastated.

That purchase was 6 years ago...

Re: When You Bought Yours First Boat....

I think what someone said above about the emotional face of buying should be noted. It is, as said, an emotional, not a rational action.

So it is likely a good thing to know this. Much as we will afterwards very rationally justify our otherwise emotionally driven 'choices'.

('Choices', not choices, to tell that choices are not choices when they are emotional).

Re: When You Bought Yours First Boat....

My first three boats were determined solely by availability and affordability. Those boats were in the 22-27 foot ranges.

Then came my Westsail 32 - a real ocean cruiser. I looked at quite a few of them before I made my move.

Finally, I got my Privilege 39 catamaran, which was the most throughly investigated purchase. I did not make the purchase until I had chartered one in the Caribbean to be sure that I was making the right decision.

All of the boats were excellent for the time in my life, and for what I wanted to do with them at that particular moment.
