Re: wheel vs. tiller steering

I was privileged to do a couple deliveries in my youth on Bacchant. At 64' long with a less than 10' beam was a pretty amazing ride!.

During a refit in the eighties at Palmer Johnson a detached spade rudder was added, at which point the original keel hung rudder became a trim tab. If I recall correctly Dave Pedrick did the design work.

You can see the trim tab tiller, which used a tiller comb, below the rudder tiller in the second image.

It's also nice with the tiller pilot turned on:

A belaying pin is used for "belaying" i.e. fastening a running line.
They are just "pins"

Not sure of the model of that tiller pilot, but it sure looks better than my ST200.

Davis Instruments 2205 Tiller Tamer | eBay

Works as a way to hold the tiller in position or loosen up the clutch and it acts as a damper to resist sudden movements of the rudder.

Re: wheel vs. tiller steering

Here are three photos showing a boat (35ft) with what looks to me to be an "extreme" wheel for the size of boat.

In this case, I would prefer a tiller…. What about you?

Of course this is a racing boat.

No in this case I would definitely prefer the wheel in a race. Been there. Needed that.

Steady, maybe the best thing for that boat would be an even bigger wheel with only two or three spokes. One can then move forward or aft of the wheel by walking through it.

The skipper never needs to move anywhere, and the FBW (Fricken Big Wheel) is a nice tuner, and can throw-about-come-about in a hurry.

Twin tillers will apparently satisfy some CF crewmates more

For some reason, that BIG wheel reminds me of a Ferris Wheel.
