What To Buy And Where To Buy It? $45,000 In My Pocket..

looking to buy my first sailboat, to live and cruise and one day circumnavigate. looking for a great deal with 45k usd to spend.

I've taken a IYT bareboat 11 day skipper coarse and have about 1k nautical miles experience. Most of which I gained helping deliver a friends brand new Lagoon 450S from Singapore to Thailand, and have been living on it and helping out for the past month and a half.

I believe what would suite me is...

A monohull with solid fiberglass hull for strength and ability to live long as this boat will already be 30+ years old.
med-heavy displacement for comfort, but can still make respectable speed.
enough room for 2 people/separate cabins. I plan to do mostly single handed while I learn and pick up crew for longer passages.
I feel like just under 40' is a good size for me and my budget.
sloop rigged..

Now i'm currently living in Thailand, but I can pack up and leave with an hours notice. While I like Thailand a lot and think it would be a good place to improve my sailing skills, hire cheap labor, I am curious to hear if there's something i'm not thinking of? (of course there is!)

Maybe I can find a lot more boat for the money somewhere else?

Maybe a different ocean would be better for beginners?

not knowing much about boats it's hard to look online and really determine how great a deal vessels are.

I've been looking at Hood/Wauquiez/Bristols 35.5 and 38'
which I really like.. and makes me think I would really be more comfortable in a 38'+
i can even stand upright in the 38 Wauquiez! (i'm 6'5" tall)

Where I start geographically doesn't matter that much to me..

If I purchased in Thailand/Langkawi i would most likely stick around SE Asia for a year or two until I felt ready to cross the Indian Ocean towards South Africa.. but I can get almost as excited about starting somewhere else if it made more sense..

thanks for your thoughts, advice and time

Joel

Joel, that Bristol 35.5 is a nice boat and could be had cheap . It's roomy , the previous owner spent a lot of money on it , it needs a few things but if you were to do the majority your self it would be - bargain

The only thing I'd do would be to have all the sails out and take a hard look at them .

I know of a waquiez 35 forsale , pm me

Barry

Hey Barry!

ya I like a lot of things about that Bristol, but I believe the engine is done (or just about done) it also needs a new fridge compressor, anchor windlass, plus maybe sails.. after all that,, I wouldn't want to offer much..

I also would really like a 2nd cabin.. and also would like to be able to stand upright (headroom is a hair too low)

I made an offer on the Wauquiez 38 today, but the owner wasn't having it.
spent the rest of the day looking at yachtworld.com and am very tempted to fly to the east coast of the states and look there as there seems to be great deals and lots of options..

I like the layout of the Freedom 32. Like the other Fredoms I have seen, they have a Nice saloon, nice galley design, nice use of wood, nice head near the companionway, etc. And your looks nice inside (comfortable and colorful space with art etc.

The video you posted helps get an impression of the interior. A view of the other key features like the cockpit, lines led aft, etc will likely help thiose unfamiliar with the boats. Good luck on your sale and hunt for your next boat.

Hi Steady, thanks. Next week I'll post a proper for sale ad.

Freedom 32 are very large for there size. They do most things well but like all boats not perfect. Although beamy for her length she still sails really well as the hull tapers of towards the waterline, less boat dragging through the water, of course the downside is less storage. She has a large rear cabin which is unusual for her length. All lines come back to the cockpit, the whole idea of freedoms is they are easy to sail. Shes been my home thus ive tried to make her homey, art etc.

C&C's are well built boats and there are some in your price range. Boats often sell for a fair bit less than asking price with winter coming too.

Hi Joel:
My Cascade 36 "Transcendence" is for sale due to illness.
Well inside your budget.
Based in Caribbean BVI at present.
Have a look at the links and if interested I'll answer any questions.
Caribbean a great place to get to learn about living aboard and honing sailing skills

Re: What To Buy And Where To Buy It? $45,000 In My Pocket..

Another option for you - How about the Caribbean? We are located in Grenada and have several boats listed here for under $45,000.

1977 Pearson 365 for $39,000
1985 Moody 34 for $35,000
1986 Pearson Freedom 32 for $30,000
1996 Beneteau 351 for $40,000

Let me know if you would like more information on any of those boats.

Beam winds,

Chris
