What Sailboat to Buy?

I have been sailing for well over 20 years and have owned many different cruising sailboats during that time. Also, I have seen many boat builders with excellent products go out of business. Reading the sailing magazines, one would think all the boats made by your typical cookie cutter companies are fine products. But having been on many recently built production sailboats, to put it lightly, I am unimpressed. Frankly, I question whether some of them would even be safe for anything but coastal cruising although they are advertised as blue water boats.

My question is, with the most recent demise of Valient, are they any great production sailboats made now that don't cost over a million dollars, and are true blue water boats. I am looking at boats now since I sold my Shannon a few months ago and am at a loss for anything worthy of buying. Any suggestions for new boats I might look at would be appreciated.

Used or new? What size? What hull material? I would say Pacific Seacraft or Island Packet.
Or, if you're willing to wait awhile, maybe this?

Here we go again.......

Tee, this subject has been beaten to death, revived, killed again and again and again.

I guess we are doomed to hashing it our forever... but you might benefit from looking in the CF archives via a search. You won't get any more agreement there than what will undoubtedly develop in this thread, but it will save you time.

Cheers,

Jim

How likely is that?

That's why I answered with one make/size sailboat without taking into consideration anything...I should have suggested a Felucca...oh chucks! Mauritz

How much do you want to spend? Used or new? Cat or monohull? Guns on board or not?...just kidding.

Re: What sailboat to buy?

Personally, I would be leaning towards a Bordeaux 60 or at the very least, I would probably go with a Grand Soleil 54. With that said, pretty much anything that floats would be a good place to start. You can buy my 1970 Seafarer 34. Not as fancy as the aforementioned vessel, but has taken care of this idiot wannabe sailor a few times already.

Re: What sailboat to buy?

Work out what you want the boat to do. Make a list of what features you would like. Decide how much money you want to spend. Then google till you find the right one with the minimum of compromises.

Simples!

Since there seems to have been some misunderstanding about the nature of the thread, I have highlighted what I believe to be the crux of the matter.

If I understand correctly, TEE is a millionaire, looking to buy a very nice and expensive production boat. I don't recall seeing this topic before, so please try to post your experience with top of the range yachts.

If you have any of course. Experience with posh yachts, that is!
