Could you simply slide a knot on the end of your ladder (stopper knot) into the larger hole and slide it down into the slot to "stop" it?

Also, the right sized door knob would fit in the hole and lock in the slot. The knob could be screwed to whatever you want (first rung of ladder?).

I have them on my boat and the ladder to go with them and it all works well. In Whitworths catalog they are called 'keyhole plates'.

Clearly it's a dunsel, but only until it is in use, much like a rope is a rope and once you apply it to something it becomes a line.

If it took a door knob it would stick out and that would make it a riprump.

That would cost more than just getting the right ladder to fit it (have you checked the Lazarette?) just in clean up costs.

You might be thinking rope ladder but until you try one you will understand why rigid ladders abound.

I agree that rope ladders are annoying, but if you were going with a rope ladder, just find the biggest nut you can fit in that slot and then use rope small enough to go through the nut with an overhand knot to keep it from pulling through. Slide the nut in and let the rope flip down over the back.

In fact, you don't even necessarily have to use rope that small for the entire ladder. You could just make loops small enough to fit through the nut and then tie the ladder with thicker rope to the loops.

I know a rigid ladder might be less annoying but I like the compact storage possibilities of a rope ladder. Here's what I'm thinking now...

I'll make a rope ladder with dowels for rungs except for the bottom step, which will be a metal tube so that it does not float.

On the top rung (all the way at the top, I'll put a bolt through the dowel on each side, with appropriately sized washers (smaller then larger) under the bolt head. That should fit in nicely in the scrumpers, pop out easily and roll up to fit in my cockpit side compartment. Thanks for the help, guys! This was a good one...

I found it! You were right svHyLyte, it was a Taylor Made ladder. And you were right too, Therapy, I had taken it out of the Lazarette last year without giving it much thought. I don't know what I thought it was, but I definitely wasn't thinking ladder.

Well I still need to get some new scrumper buttons, as the old ones are rusted out. Otherwise it looks to be in good shape. Thanks, all!
