What is a Melody Class ?

Looking for info on this boat I dont have..
story is,
I had a guy come in last year that was moving and asked If I wanted some old rigging in a mast, boom, rudder and dagger board, plus a full set of sails..
The wood is all finished and in great shape, so I hung it on the wall of the shop..
He claimed the hull was all rotted and wasnt worth rebuilding and it would be better if I built another..
Problem is
The only info I can find was a Melody Class resembling a Sabot that was raced back in the 50s and 60s..
dont even know what it looks like..
The mast is about 18 feet and boom about 8 feet and does use a jib, as I have both sails..
any help..????

Did a little googling and the best I found so far is this:


It is described as a junior sailer with a high una Bermudan rig sailed in
the western United States. Designed by William Ashcroft, this single-hander
has a hard chine pram plywood hull. LOA 10ft 0ins,Beam 3ft 3ins, sail area
65 sq ft.

you're right on David.. have one here for my grandkids.. the story has ended at this point,
as,
Had another gentelman, who was building a dink for his grandkids at his home in the San Juans and wanted the spars for the dink.. they are all strapped to the gunnel of a trawler and headed up the coast at present.. they have been given a second life in the northwest..
In return for the mast and rigging, I was given some very rare burgees.. something to add to my colection..

My parents boating partners bought one back in the early 60s. It was 10 ft long had one sail, with a small wire standing rigging. It was kind of laid out like an el toro, but along the sides in the rear of the boat on both sides was a bench seat. so you weren't sitting on the bottom getting wet from any water that was on the deck.for a larger person it was a great little boat. We sailed it and pulled up the center board , had a plug for the hole and used it as a dingy with about a 1 hp engine. I haven't seen one for decades.. To bad they were a great little boat, but never as popular as the el toro..best of luck Jeff

Designed by William Aschcroft, USA, 1951. Made of wood. LOA 10'. Beam 3'3". Centerboard boat like an El Toro but 2 feet longer and less beam. Mainsail should be 55 sqft. and it is called an una which means no jib or spinnaker. This is from Sailing Boats of the World a guide to classes.

If you wanted to rebuild a hull I'd use El Toro plans and extend it two feet. One foot on each end. If you want a set of El Toro plans they are available through their association or you can buy my set.
