What Happens to Broken Boats ?

I've always wondered about this, and sadly never know. But what happens to 40ft boats that have met their expiration date?(so to speak).

Chainsaw and a dumpster. Sadly, I have done several. Makes you feel like an executioner...

They end up a creek somewhere as a home for someone like this example, unfortunately an exposed beach isn't the ideal location.

Well I certainly hoped it was something more graceful than that.

Do people really waste good wine on the bow to only later lose the boat to a chain saw and a dumpster?

Sadly I think that may be the best case situation. I've seen too many that just rotted away until they sank or were on the rocks. Once someone stops caring for the needy things they are best put out of their misery.

The chainsaw is better then seeing all the dead boats sunk alongside the Bayou like ya see down here !! sorta puts a damper on a nice day to see a Nice old cypress shrimper sunk and comming apart as ya go on your way out to sea ! just my 2 cents

Very true. Most of the ones I've sawn up were abandoned at our boatyard by shifty clients. After a year or two if it's all rotten and no one will buy it, out comes the chain saw. I've done a couple for clients who didn't realize how bad the situation was too, always very sad...

I've heard of guys in South Florida who buy derelict boats super cheap and sell the ballast and metals for scrap. They then chain saw the glass. Seems cruel, but they make a buck or two doing it.

Too bad expiry date is most often dictated by an owner who did not know how to take care of the boat.

Fl is full of that because it's a hurricane zone. As well as the ship wreckers there are a lot of travelling glass guys who "fix" hurricane boats and then sell them. Buyer beware down there...

You have to consider that dumping plastic anywhere in the waterways or ocean is illegal. So really, a chainsaw and a dumpster is a legitimate legal method of disposal for a boat made out of plastic resins.

Yes. Have sawn up a couple of woodies as well, mostly old houseboats but also some others. One guys boat we hauled out and a couple of planks fell off as soon as she came out of the water-they were only being held on by hydostatic pressure. How the boat made it to the yard without sinking I'll never know. We sawed that one up. The lamest part is that if the owner is an honest guy and pays his bill it costs quite a bit to throw a boat away.
I've never wrecked a steel or ferro boat. I assume steel would be cut up and recycled, but what to do with a ferro hulk...

It's becoming routine at our yard too. Some were no longer viable, even as liveaboard go nowhere's. There's an experienced boat improver that gets a few months free mooring for his efforts, but UK (bloody european legislations) rules require 'correct' disposal of all materials. GRP is useless and expensive to dispose of. Rotten timber can't be burnt at site, engines are usually too old to have any value, even the rigger is of time warp age.
