If everyone used Google, then we wouldn't have use for all the Old Salts' advice!

There is no value in a capsize.

Cap-size: What increases in circumference the more a racer wins.

Chuckles

Some boats sail better with the keel upwards (not to be confused with multihulls which have no keel and therefore sail equally well right side up or upside down). Capsize value is the measure of how well it sails with the keel upwards.

Have to be careful here - any buckets suspended from the railing will slow the boat down

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Do you do ANY research yourself before you post your questions?

I don't believe you have a Hunter as you have indicated on your profile. Those of us do request that you correct your profile because you are making us look bad!

Re: What does capsize value mean???

Capsize value = the inverse of your head size divided by your IQ.multiplied by the length times the width of your boat.....

That's amazing no one knew the correct answer. EU class A requires it to be less than 1.

Considering that the Capsize Screening Factor--or Ratio--(as a non-dimensional estimate of yacht's propensity to capsize) is the beam divided by the cube root of the yacht's displacement measured in cubic feet of sea water, the displacment to beam ratio would have to be pretty spectacular. Our beam, at about 13', and displacement, at about 23,000 lbs at "half load" yields a Capsize Screening Factor of about 1.81. To get that down to 1.0, our half load displacement would have to be about 137,000#!! For most racing the break point is 2.0 or less, or, in our case, about 17136#.

FWIW...

Re: What does capsize value mean???

Chuckles,

Knowing you to be too lazy to look for things yourself. Here is a link to USsailing calculators. Not only capsize value but lots of other goodies.

Now go read about them and if , AFTER, you have read about them, you have some intelligent questions, we might answer them

Capsize Formula
