What Boats Have the Most Headroom?

It was great on the basket ball court, but being 6'5" when shopping for a boat is a bit painful.

Can anyone direct me toward boats with ample headroom?

Re: What boats have the most headroom?

I'm 6'4", and found that it quickly becomes second nature in the lower parts of the boat to slouch, stand with feet wide apart, or lean against a countertop or bulkhead. I don't even notice that I am doing it unless I pay attention to it, and don't think I developed bad posture from years of doing it.

Deck saloon type boats have a ton of headroom in that area. My last boat had a lot of camber in the coachroof, so there was plenty of height near the centerline, but I'd have to adapt towards the edges.

Re: What boats have the most headroom?

What are you looking for? My old Grampian 34 had 7-feet of headroom in the main cabin, and around 6'6" in the aft, head and V.

A Viking longboat?

Seriously, having feet beyond normal sizing, I feel for your situation, but if you are shopping based on headroom, it's easier to stoop a bit, sit for the head, and save your full-body stretches for cockpit or deck.

Re: What boats have the most headroom?

Open boats have plenty!

Older cabin boats tend to generally have less than newer boats.

Looking at topsides gives a general idea.

Bigger boats tend to have ample headroom.

1. Open boats
2. Boats designed by Mark Ellis or Ted Hood, both of whom are tall.
3. Boats > 60 ft.

I am 6'7" and weigh about as much as a mack truck. My lake is limited to 32 foot boats give or take a foot or two. You learn to crook your back below decks.

Under a full heel most all sailboats have 8' ceilings. Lol. Sail her like you stole it and go below and dance a jig.

Look at a Fuji 40. Well built fiberglass cruising boat from 1978 era. TONS of headroom.

There is one listed - and I have been on it - at Neuptune Yacht Sales in New Bern, NC.

Pretty nice boat.

I've given up on ever being able to stand in a sailboat I own...I'm 6'9", used to slouching! Good excuse to spend more time lying down with the girl

Need to know what size/budget are. Ours has enough for 6'10" in most of it.

Re: What Boats Have the Most Headroom?

Swan, Baltic, Oyster.... some models have more then others....

An older Semi-Custom or Custom...

Best of luck... It is no fun to be playing Quasimodo on you OWN boat....

and for a longer journey it is just not healthy to be stooped over all the time...
