Re: Westsail 32 - Opinions Needed !

I think boat slagging is probably number two on the lists of why moderators get cranky, well maybe number three, but it is a discussion forum and I would ask, as I have before, that everyone respect each others opinions. Tyro or old salt, everyone is welcome to express an opinion here if they do it respectfully.

Thanks.

If "Oregonian" is in fact Dave, please accept my Apology, for thinking your full of it.. you've got a lot to offer and I hope you stick around..
And I also hope you understand why I said what I did..
There is good number of people that drop in on the forum spouting their background and having mucho experance only to be recognised as full of crap..
still dont like the "lot to learn remark" but I can live with it..

GWB
Brookings Oregon hey, spent a season there on the way south from the San Juans.. did some photo work for the Yacht Club there on a couple dink races on the river.
was asked politely to leave after I had a go-round with the "new" harbor master about a guy next to us in a fishing boat using a bucket for a toilet and dumping it off the back of his boat.. was told by the harbor master that they had been doing it for years and he wasnt going to stop them now.. we on the south side of the upper harbor due to draft issues..
actually was working with the girl at the book store for awhile.. she was selling my photos on consignment in the store....

Well, you sure are going about that in a very strange way. IMO doing more harm than good.........by appearing to be a prize looney .

Have you ever sold Rocna Anchors - or owned a Catamaran?

I have had my mind set on a W32 for a few years now and in fact will be viewing one for sale this afternoon.

BTW, I am one of the many thousands of viewers of this thread.

Good luck with that, if you have any questions after seeing the boat don't hesitate to ask.

Isn't that the truth, before joining CF I hadn't heard of them. However, I did spot a rather nice one up the Beaulieu River last summer.

Now some folk must like them because they seem to hold their price.

One thing I've noticed, here in the Eastern Pacific, is that the majority of Westsails I come across have a wind vane bolted to the transom. Tells me that these boats have been cruised.

The boat was heavily infested with termites.

Ah, that's too bad! I have heard that termites like to go sailing

Project boats can be good value, but only if you have a lot of time and are handy. Otherwise in my experience it is smarter to pay a bit more and get a boat that has minor issues.
Ask me how I know

The deal isn't dead. My interest for a W32 carries on regardless.

Re: Westsail 32 - Opinions Needed !

The boat in Berkely Marina is a custom interior and/or owner built boat. From the pictures, it looks like it is well done and the chart table and galley are different stock. The sit down chart table was a modification that a number of people made. It reduces the commodious storage under the chart table and large space to spread out charts of the factory arrangement but there is something to be said for the comfort of a sit down chart table.

If you buy a 32, get rid of the staysail boom. They are dangerous, always seem to be in the way and usually make for a poor setting and smaller staysail. Put down short tracks on the cabin top with winches aft for handling the sail. You can have a larger staysail built, if you feel the need, to go with the loose footed arrangement. Never ever missed the self tacking ability of the boomed staysail and the boat liked the well set, larger staysail.

Re: Westsail 32 - Opinions Needed !

"The boat was heavily infested with termites."

Actually the termites are a custom self lightening modification to the boat.

Termites can be exterminated by tenting the boat. They do it regularly here in the Termite Capital of America. As long as you catch them before they get too far along, Termites are not a big deal.

Having said that, looked at a Westsail 39 here that had extensive termite damage. The galley and forepeak plywood was so eaten by termites that you could poke holes in it as the only thing left of the plywood was the outside veneer in large areas.
