Westphal

I did a search on here but can't find info on Westphal boats.
Sailboat for Sale! $2000
Can anyone tell me anything about Westphal boats? Can't find much googling it so thought I'd come to the experts.

Must be extremely rare.
There is a Westphal one-design of which hardly any are left.
I think I have a brochure or something for this model. I forget what he called it. I will see if I can dig it up.
Interesting because I was never sure if any were ever built. We now know that there was at least one. I wonder if these owners would know more. All boats from David Westphal had at least one completely unique feature that never quite caught on.
If you buy it, I would love to come down and look at it.

Who is/was the maker? What did they say?
It was actually designed by this person we are talking about, David Westphal of FL, USA?

Thanks.

Re: Westphal

I owned and sailed a Westphal One Design ( Hull #12) in Sag harbor for many years. It was a wonderful boat and we have many fond memories. She was built in 1969 on the Miami river and was one of 20 or so hulls made. I proposed to my wife on that boat! We looked up Dave Westphal on a trip to Key Largo once and had a very nice afternoon sipping iced tea and talking boats. Dave designed and built several different designs over the years and when we met him in around 2000 he was heavily into model aviation and building planes. The boat is now in the Brewers yard in Greenport where two young guys are bringing her back to life.

Re: Westphal

Since my last post I sailed scintilla my westphal 46 around the Bahamas . ( where we've left her at a friends house until we can get back in a month )
She sailed amazingly and was chuffed to bits .
David westphal did design and build the boats as far as I know and we are in touch with each other .
I sent them a text to say thanks for making scintilla all those years ago and that myself and girlfriend love her . We got a lovely reply from Mrs westphal and Mrs w and David have invited me for a drink at their home in the keys. Maybe with the kind permission of them I'm hoping to maybe do a recorded interview , for prosperity as we hope to own our boat for a long time .
We set sail back end of this year around the world after a quick sail back to Miami for a little bit of maintainence and fill up with cheap fuel .
I'm not sure how to post photos .
But if anyone would like direct contact then I'm on woody@apexloft.com . Thanks

Re: Westphal

Let me ok it with mr westphal .
My list of questions is endless . I was hoping if he did want to do one , I'd do it " 59 degrees north " style .
( if you listen to that sailing blog )?

I think westphal boats although rare need to be made more famous or at least share all we know for prosperity .

Re: Westphal

Just a quick update on westphal boats .
I've still got mine and been travelling to it on grand Bahama all year mainly doing general repairs and working on getting the westerbeke generator rebuilt .
My girlfriend is now my fiancée and we are hoping to move on board in the summer a few month after our baby is born in May .

But I eventually got to meet David westphal at his home .
I had lunch and eventually worked out with David which scintilla I had .
He named most of his boats scintilla so it took a little working out .
But once we established which one he pulled a full photo album of my scintillas past life and even newspaper clippings of when he won completions in her.

He also had some great stories and over the 5 hours we spent chatting I learnt a lot and had a great afternoon .

David and his wife reckon they've made 200 boats in total and are still making them to this day .

Mr westphal is actually selling a 65 ft boat at the minute called ! Yes scintilla ,
He has only just retired from his boat yard .
I'm sure I'll be back to see them so if you have any questions please pm me them .
Thanks woody

Good work. I wish I had read your post earlier since I was just in the exact area a week ago. Since I am very interested in this subject, I will see if I can send you a PM on this system.

Re: Westphal

I have a Westphal 28 daysailor which sails wonderfully and is very well constructed. Most of these boats were destroyed by hurricane. Mr. Westphal built some great boats.

Re: Westphal

Hi Tom
Where did you get your hurricane info from out of a matter of intreast ?
Funnily enough the broker we bought out scintilla off fed us a similar story .
That was actually not 100% true . He said David made 6 boats . Called them all scintilla and mine was the only one not destroyed in h sandy .
I know of at least 3 scintillas still sailing the seas .
