West Coast of Long Island, Bahamas

I am planning a cruise this spring from Georgeown, Great Exuma down island. My boat draws 5'6" the chart looks skinny on the west side at the south end of Long. Can I get through and out to Crooked Island that way on a high tide? Has anybody done it?

Two ways -

1) Leaving from Georgetown go south through Hog Cay Cut towards the Jumentos then to the southeast area of Long Island. Hog Cay Cut will require high tide for your draft and even then may give you problems.

2) Georgetown south to near Hog Cay Cut but then turn eastwards to Salt Pond, Long Island. From there head west through the Comer Channel to south of Hog Cay Cut, then south towards the Jumentos then to the southeast point of Long Island.

Some people refer to the Jumentos as the Ragged Islands.

I would use Comer Channel if I were you. High tide is also recommended for this channel. Spend the night in Salt pond then you should have a daylight trip (a long day) to one of several places to anchor (in prevailing winds) along the SE coast of long Island after passing through the Comer Channel portion. Then on to Crooked Island/Long Cay/Acklins Island.

I would not do that trip without Steve Pavilidis' guide books to the appropriate regions and the Explorer Charts for same.

My opinion of Acklins Island is the same as the sign hung on the government clinic by the doctor that used to be there.

Option #2 with your draft. It only adds about 4 hours by going the long way through comer channel but will work better for your draft.

+1 Comer Channel. And if the tides right and little wind, go south just east of the white bank and anchor overnight near the east end of Comer Channel.

And, whatever you do, don't dare explore the abandoned settlement at Pompey Bay...

In both cases above change southeast/se to southwest/sw.
