Ask Peter Coyote......Oh, I forgot. Peter dissappeared in the Atlantic while crossing it in his multihull. I guess that's why many of them have hatches on the underside of the hull.

Best Blue Water Cruising Sailboat of all time , any boat that has positive stability while upside down cannot be in the running , multihulls with their many advantages are out. Murphy's Law dictates that if the mast and sails are better suited pointing downward , that this will occur at some point .

everytime I see a multi hull off shore which isn't often I cant help but wonder about the owner

Any boat anywhere can sink , any person testing the sea gods with statements like " she's unsinkable " should have learnt from the Titanic !

There are a lot of Catamarans blue water cruising , more than ever. Murphy's Law may not occur in the owners life time. Are any Catamarans self righting ?

It would seem that a self righting cruising cat would require a very large inflatable bag at the mast head and that would just get the boat to less than roughly 90 degrees. What about the rest of the way? I can't imagine how it could work.

Insurance stats state the cruising multi is a slightly better risk for blue water sailing than the cruising mono. It also states that a person on a cruising mono has a seven times greater chance of being injured than those on the multi. Must be that heeling thing?

We saw one and the wife loved it. Must say I was impressed also. This one had a wee pilot house, internal steering station.

But it had issues, issues and issues.

At best it would have been a complete rebuild.

That's odd! I can't find any of those stats in my insurance data base. Please tell me where to find that information.

'Best' is a judgement call. One person's lemon is another person's ideal boat. For me personally, it would be the Westsail 28.
Small enough to solo, but big enough for a family. Strong and stable, looks good, keeps its resale value and it has a canoe stern.
Keeping it simple with a transom hung rudder/tiller, self-furling cutter rig and a DECENT size engine, it would (and has) take an ordinary guy, with common sense and a reasonable level of health/fitness anywhere in the world without Thurston Howell's wallet or Joshua Slocum's balls.
Also like the Pearson Triton 28 and the Southern Cross 28.
The Westsail 33 is also a fine sailboat, but a bit too heavy to comfortably solo-sail and that might discourage a captain from unload crew members who aren't working out.
But like I said, it's just my opinion.

Wauquiez Amphitrite. The Oyster 39 is very similar, but I have not been aboard an oyster. Owned A43 -138 for 3.5 years. A true blue water boat, not a great coastal cruiser.

I guess I jumped in at the right time! I had the ultimate blue water cruiser and now own the ultimate cruiser! The Richard Woods Vardo 34. Can't sink does 10 knots in average tradewinds, mid teens in a stiff breeze, 16.5 knots well reefed is top so far.

ever try to right one of those in any conditions much less a storm? In todays world of sat phones ebribs etc. they are usable and great but not my cup of tea.
