If you do, make sure you change the thermostat to a raw water cooled one.

If it was originally a raw water cooled setup, changing back would certainly simplify things a bit.
If the engine was NOT raw water cooled to start, it likely is not designed internally to withstand the temperature and corrosion factor of circulating (not quite so hot, but very corrosive) raw seawater within, and would likely lead to a failure (and any failure almost always occurs at the most inopportune moment).
If the engine was designed as 'raw water', the manufacturer made some design choices in materials and strength/thicknesses, etc., to allow direct long term internal contact with seawater.

As far as Volvo-Penta's, my only contact with them is from a buddy who had a V-P outdrive runabout. He was a darned good mechanic, and he grew to hate Volvo's, because his was a 1Cl POS no matter what he did.

.....
The 2000 series was shipped both raw and fresh water cooled models. The blocks are the same, although some ports need to be blocked to switch.

Re: volvo penta 2002 leaking pump

Before you do anything drastic like changing your cooling system .... I know replacement parts can be a problem with VP when your engine hits the 15-20 year mark however spwaterpumps.co.uk were able to refurb the water pump on my Volvo Penta 21d. Great service, simply post your pump
