Volunteering

I want to start taking kids from the Boys and Girls Club sailing for an afternoon along with their parents. I have 3 questions. -1. Is their a liability issue since I am not a captain. -2. Do I need to be a captain if I volunteer my services as part of a fund raiser. -3. Is there potential for a tax deduction for my time and boat expenses. Thanks

Re: Volunteering

I'd talk to my insurance company.
I once flew kids from school in my airplane for the EAA, I decided not to do that again.
I doubt you could write it off, but if your in that income bracket, that means you have a CPA prepare your taxes, ask them.

Re: Volunteering

It complicated and tricky, and there are some limitations. If you want a real answer then feel free to pm me for my legal rates. My advice is to speak with your insurance company and the insurance company for the non-profit and be very clear about what you are planning to do and ask them if they will specifically include coverage for those activities in writing.
