Is this kosher though? To walk the marinas when you don't have a slip?

Re: Viewing a boat by proxy
I have twice used a surveyor for a walk-though inspection and found the $200 to be very well spent.

Re: Viewing a boat by proxy
[QUOTE=Ryban;2346402]Is there a means by which to have a fellow sailor go look at a boat for me, as sort of a preliminary inspection?/QUOTE]
I've done this a few times here in Kingston for people who live a few hours away. At the very least, I can take a few hundred pictures, get the owner to open up a bit, and give my unbiased opinion. In one case the boat was really awful and overpriced, so I saved someone many hours of driving.
I've been there myself...drove to T.O. too many times to see boats that took 5 seconds to know they were misrepresented. Now if the owner won't send a few dozen pics, I won't waste my time.
If you are looking at a boat anywhere near Kingston ON, I'd be happy to go look, take pics, and share my opinion...no charge of course.

More likely I'll stay with a friend on a month-to-month basis if the boat isn't already in a liveaboard location, until something can be arranged.
Boats that meet my perceived requirements and fall into my price range include:
- Contessa 26
- Tartan 27 & 30
- Cape Dory 27 & 30
- Albin Vega 27
- Bayfield 29
- Alberg 30
- Rawson 30
- Pearson Vanguard 32
So mostly small budget 30-50 year-old proven passage-makers.

Re: Viewing a boat by proxy
Well, here is a Columbia 29, and it is right in my neighborhood. There are slips available around here and it is a good place to refit and practice with the channel and local islands to practice around. This one is nearly free because it needs so much though. If you think it is a possibility you might give the owner a call. It is a good, simple and strong hull, and chances are I'd guess the basic soundness of the hull is there. I personally would consider it a very good potential, but I do my own work and I have a network of friends and acquaintances in the local marinas to turn to.

sure sad to see them just sit as a liveaboard for years!

It does say "good condition" so it is hard to tell from photos. If you are interested and I can help, let me know.

Re: Viewing a boat by proxy
I had not heard of Kijiji, is it a Canadian thing?
I like that Bayfield. As it is, it does stand on the upper-end of my budget, but my total budget for the boat is about 20-30K. So I may be willing to spend more for something more "ready", if in the end it works out to about the same cost.
I haven't paid too close attention to boats on the great lakes as it would somewhat expensive to have them towed to an ocean. Another option would be to navigate out to the Atlantic, but it'd be quite the journey just to get "started". That said, if there's something I'm really eyeing in your neighborhood, I'll certainly take you up on your offer.
$1250 sounds like a 2-year project. I'm a bit dubious because there are more pictures of the surroundings than there are the boats. Unless he forgot a zero.

Not sure why post duplicated itself there, but it was listed earlier and has a few more pictures there. Yes, it's a project boat.

I most definitely would be, though I haven't settled on a particular style. I like the styles of WhiteSpotPirates and of course the Delos crew. I have a background in photography that I hope to exploit to its fullest.

Re: Viewing a boat by proxy
I can second the Tartan 30. Owned one for 12 years and took it to Bermuda
fron Ct (about 600+ miles offshore thru Gulfstream). Mine was Competition version with taller mast and deeper keel, Very stiff boat- handles seas very well. If buying a another one I would look for a diesel refit ( from Atomic 4). Came in 2 versions- side or Aft galley, I liked aft galley. The boat design is Offshore capable (even cross oceans.) Depends on condition and skill of skipper/ crew. Shop condition-equipment not age.

A lot of these boats that I like are equipped with the Atomic 4, and I've been wondering how much this should influence my decision-making process, and whether or not I should stick with a good-running Atomic 4, or replace it with a diesel should such a boat come into my hands.
How much more should one be willing to pay for a diesel version of the same boat -- assuming both engines are of equal quality.

Re: Viewing a boat by proxy
I notice the alberg 30 on your list. like the yankee to the tartan example, Albergs turn up under different names also, for example, Whitby, ericson 30, and pearson 30. the pearson, ericson, and columbias of a certain era were very incestuous, some even shared a mold, some were sued for windows looking too much like another's signature, but all had a design by Carl Alberg or flagrant copy and were basically 30 feet long. Using these terms may produce some more results in your search. have you looked at Allied? they are strong boats from the era you are interested in.

Re: Viewing a boat by proxy
I should correct my previous post. The alberg design did not appear in pearson or ericson until 35 feet. unless you count the triton/ariel. the Rhodes designed pearson vanguard 33 and the king designed ericson 30 have similar underbody style to Alberg Designs, but they are not exactly "flagrant" copies, and they may be of interest to you. The columbia 29 also shares alot of underbody style, but is a S&S design, also worth looking at if you like these types. All are in keeping with older proven passagemaking criteria and may increase your available options. Also I see no reason why Bristol 27 would not be a consideration. Brute build, alberg design, often ridiculously cheap.
