Saw an article on the news tonight that the UN is going to require member states to ban any vessel that can sink. Amazing

Well not actually ban but must carry Government supported insurance that will guarantee the cost of removal of sunken vessel from the waterway. Be ready to pay hugely for that. They are talking transponders built into every vessel with barometric pressure devices that will go off when the boat sinks etc. The new world order apparently. US Coast Guard is very excited apparently

The organization which sponsors maritime mandates like the one you refer to is undoubtedly the IMO, International Maritime Organization, which is indeed a unit of the United Nations. However, I could find no mention at imo.org of such insurance requirements as you saw on television; and I would welcome a link being posted if you have one and care to pursue this.

In the wake of the Cascade Concordia stranding, I would not be surprised to see new insurance requirements which could ease efforts to recover damages from the effects of ships whose stranding or sinking have posed a danger. In any case, this would likely apply only to vessels of >300 tons, or possibly >1000 tons. Regarding the transponder that would signal the sinking of a commercial vessel - a serious consideration would reveal that this could be a great idea and the cost would be minimal, probably little more than an EPIRB. Which btw are already mandated on commercial vessels of certain types and service.

As a taxpaying citizen, I would personally welcome the fact that such ships spread their risk through insurance, rather than push the sometimes huge costs of an incident onto a single community or state. The maritime industry is much improved due to the efforts of the IMO, not to mention SOLAS, MARPOL, and numerous other conventions and treaties put forward by the UN. I believe everyone could benefit from a short visit to www.imo.org to see how these serious topics are handled at the intergovernmental level.

Yea wont ya LOVE having a transponder aboard your boat so the Gov can tell where ya are at all times !! wonderfull !! Im glad my days are numberd so I don't have to live with this type of BIG BROTHER crap cus it's more then likely gonna happen someday soon !! Just saying

We all ready have a start to that here, They call them Electricity smart meters,

Its just a meter that tells how much electricity you use,

But this records every tiny amount of power your using at all times, And it is wired up to Satellite sending your details constantly,

Its also compulsory by Govt to change your ordinary meter to the Smart metre,

One place, not sure where, Are considering a law that states.
