To the Marquesas, and Beyond . . .

From today's 'Lectronic Latitude, comes the story of an ambitious Hungarian cruiser and where he's gotten to since leaving Europe:

"Where There's A Will, There's A Way

"September 19, 2007 – Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia

(Click on the
photo to enlarge it.)

"Yes, it took 52 days from the Galapagos, but who cares?
© 2007 Liz Clark

"Today's Photo of the Day is of 'Aron', a young Hungarian man who has sailed his modest little 19-footer all the way from Europe. She may not be the most luxurious boat, and the Galapagos to Marquesas leg might have taken him 52 days . . ."

To read the whole story, go to:

Latitude 38 - Northern California's Premier Sailing and Marine Magazine

Aloha Pura and Tao,
I have come to the conclusion that a "bluewater, open ocean, offshore vessel" is one in which a sailor accidentally survives to return to port.
I guess I'm a bit more overly cautious.
Kind Regards,
JohnL

Many moons ago, when I was about 18, I sailed aboard a comfortable 40+ foot sloop from England to Copenhagen via the Kiel Canal.

One of the other British boats that pulled into the Skovshoved Yacht Club was an open, clinker built gaff rigged dory with two hirsute young men. They too had crossed the English Channel, traversed the Canal and sailed up the Baltic.

We sailed. They were sailors, and I will always remember them.

Any one that makes it across counts. It's been done in boats half that size so you care to beat the record?

I'm glad there's at least one more person out there proving that you don't need 40 feet to live the dream.
