The tipping I'm most aware of is in the poorly-paid service industries like food serving and some other basic personal services like maids, taxis, gardeners, marine dock people, etc. The problem, at least here in North America, is that these have become so poorly paid (in general) that tipping is now an essential part of these workers' basic income.

If these people were paid a reasonable wage then we wouldn't need to tip them. But it has developed this way for employers to offload the cost of employees directly onto their customers, while maintaining the illusion of lower prices for their product or service. This model is now ripe in North Americas economy, and is growing.

This is explains why we are seeing the expansion of tipping.

I only tip waiters and not in every country. Why tip a pro that you pay for doing their job?

Well, thanks for the comments. I figured that there's some travel involved and maybe the little extra would compensate for gas (petrol).
It occurred to me that it might be an issue here in the States, and contracting a marine surveyor isn't so common a thing, so wasn't familiar if there was a certain protocol involved.
But again, thanks for enlightening me.

In my experience, surveyors generally charge you for travel expenses/ travel time.

As a surveyor I would neither expect nor accept a tip. I am frequently given a bottle of rum or wine and I do accept these as I feel it would be ungracious not too but even that embarrasses me a little.
