No, it's only fraying in the mid-section of the mainsail leech for about a 3 foot span. The top and bottom areas are still looking strong (and by that I mean the entire zig-zag stitch is through nice solid canvas. The top and bottom areas will eventually fray, however, which is why I wanted some glue or tape product to prevent that from happening.

It's always hard when there isn't a real consensus on this website I think I'm going to go with your approach, Alchemy, and put teflon tape over the edge and sew through it. I'll use some regular sail tape over the rest of the leech to prevent any future fraying. This approach seems easy and it won't compromise any future repairs if the whole leech has to be redone in a few more years time.
